At the Orono Public School Orono Public School received a visit froin Fariner Richard and bis sidekick Shelley froin the Visual Arts Centre, last Tuesday. Richard Toms and Shelley Holiday of the Visual ArtsCentre are currently visiting area schools which replied to a questionnaire sent out by the VAC in Bowmanville. 1 actually think IVve done it. 1 tbink I have found the world's stupîdest invention. It is not only stupid, it's a waste of money and it's derived froin a rather bizarre concept- Introducing the self-flushing toilet.... If you care to sec this marvelous creation first band., hop on the GO-train and travel to Union Station. Stop there. You need go no further. No transfer to catch a subway or bus to the Science Centre necessary. Don't get a connecting train that will take you to the Museumn of Man- Made Wondrous and Weird Inventions in Whatsville. No merely get off the train and walk froin the platfonm to the bathroom. Here you wilI find the amazîng "Toilet of the Future." 'Mis thing is the biggest pain in the... neck. (Whew, almost had a really bad pun, there.) In less than two minutes, this dumb thing had self flushed about ten limes. 1 guess that when you move you break a laser beain that activates the flush mechanisin (or mhat's the explanation they gave for the self- tap-turning faucet.) Weil, when trying to tuck a t-shirt into a pair of jeans while hanging out in a space mhat doesn't really have ail that much elbow room, a sort of ceremonial dance is required. This, it seems breaks the laser beain and thus... flush. Just tucking in my shirt, prompted five flushes. 1 thought there was a group The students, unde r the guidance of Richard and Shelley made animal masks from paper bags. They started willi a rousing set of Old MacDonald to set the mood. Shelley Holliday of the Visual Arts Centre, dresses as a cow to stimulate the imagination of students at Orono Public School. somnewhere that is telling us that freshi water is becomning more and more scarce. Maybe they should protest at Union Station. Gallons and gallons of wasted water. But as 1 eluded to in a prior parenthesis, the faucets were also automnatic, and the haniddryers as well. The whole bathroomn was automnatie. Why? Its not as if we were going into performn surgery afterwards. In fact, the only thing that didn't work automnatically was thec door. The nerve. You go to the bathroomn>, you clean your hands, and then you have to open the door by yourself using a door handie that everyone else in the world has used. Go figure. How much do you think they spent to revamp the bathrooms at Union Station? 1 could hazard a guess, but it uPsets me to realize that the money they spent might be a whole lot more than the arnount of money that I will make in this lifetime. So there you have it. The world's stupidest invention. So next time 1 find that I've Missed my train by mere seconds (a bad habit), and find mhat 1 must wait a full hour for the next one to aPpear, I'm going to the bamhroom. At least there's some sort of entertainment there. People have a fit when there looking for a tap that doesn't exist. And it's really funl when the water just suddenly aPPears. Hey, look, it's a miracle. 1 got water froin a faucet that has no tap. The Lifesaver course is designed to teach essential lifesaving first aid skills to people of il ages.
