Hope Township girl wins World carvmng championship ln the world of carving Vanessa Adams, 14 years, of Hope Townsbip, has made a name for herseif. She placed first in the youtb division of the Ward World Cbampionship Wildfowl Carving Competition. The competition was held recently in Ocean City, Maryland, for a week, where Va nessa and ber mother were guests during the competition. Vanessa, a student at Bethany Hilîs School won first place with ber carving and painting of the colourful Kinglet and also placed second with ber carving of a Chîckadee. Vanessa was competing with 70 other youths in the division. Vaneesa started carving in 1991 in Port Hope under the tutelage of Brad Kelly and more recently with Millbrook carver Bruce Lepper of, Millbrook. Vanessa continued ber carvings and currently is working on another Kinglet, a Chipping Sparrow and intends to work on a Marsh Wren. She will enter competition at the North American Carving Championsbips to bc beld in September this year. Vanessa is expected to be on television and a spread in the National Geographics is expected in a couple of month on tbe win i Ocean City. Welfare fraud checks pay off -Northumberland County's decision to crackdown on welfare fraud bas paid off to the tune of $34,000 since a fuîl-time investigator was hired in December. The County Fraud Officer refers any suspected cases to the police for prosecution. Garden The native community in Alderville north of Cobourg had receive a $ 10,000 grant from the province to grow vegetables in a communal garden. Tbose at the Alderville Community Health Clinic had applied for the grant to plant a one acre plot at the Centre. The money will be used for a full- time garden co-ordinator, to buy seeds and some tools. m
