Orono W.ekIy.TIms1.W.dn.sday, May 12,1993-3 ~ The Road to Avonlea replayed in Orono It could well have been "Thie Road to Avonlea", a popular CBC production but ini fact it was the road to the Orono Park witb the event taking place Saturday afternoon. The travel of the wedding party from Hillcrest Lane and along Main Street to the Orono Park ceremony did flot go without notice in the Village. First it was the groom and bis best-man and no doubt the clergy being drîven by horse and carniage to the, ceremony. This was followed by the bride and hier party as pictured above. The wedding ceremony took place in tbe Orono Park before a decorated trellises where Lydia Smit, Maple Grove, was united in marriage to Eric Munson of Florida. As bas been mentioned it could bave been a scene from queen's Park Report from Gord Mills, MPP Durham East One Queen's Park columnist commented Iast week that MIPP's are squeamisb about confronting the issue of their salaries. That comment, and othersa have placed MPPs directly on the fining line througb suggestions that we are grossly over paid, and on top of that, we ail pick up extra "pocket- mnoney" througb a generous bonus system. 1 said it once before, but it bears repeating, when 1 accepted the nomination to contest the riding of Durham East, I had no idea wbatsoever, nor was I even interested in what the position paid. That may be tough for some to believe, nevertbeless, it is the truth. My interest in wbat the position paid, was non-existent. In fact, it wasn't untîl after my election, and a meeting witb the previous member, who gave me a basic run-through of salary and allowances, that 1 bad the faintest idea of wbat to expect. Ail of this brings me to the presenit scene beîng played out in the media that suggests MWPs are for the most part, over paid lazy lay-about lbuts, who enjoy ricb pensions and tax-free allowances. Strangely enough, 1 haven't seen quite the level of rbetoric in the media over the salary and allowances paid to MP's. Despite the fact tbat federal ridmngs are for the most part almost the same size as provincial ridings, the duties and responsibilities are identical, yet federal members receive about $30,000 a year more? Is the reason for ail the ballyhoo because the NDP is the provincial government, and just a bit more embarrassment heaped on themn looks good? I'mt sonry twbe so cynical - but! Last week, and without any prompting from me, my own staff worked out my remuneration, based upon my typical work-week Tbey found that on an hourly basis 1 was paid less than any of my staff. 1 am flot holding elected office because 1 need a job - you have to believe me. 1 don't consider myseif to be a whiz wbo sbould command a large salary, and l'mn certainly flot doing it for a pension, altbough somne may have had that motive. 1 am flot a I"part- time" member, witb otber side interests that coinpete with fuît service to constituents. But 1 do have a passion wo serve everyone, regardless of political affiliation, in the best possible way 1 can. Some may disagree, and make their point by way of the occasional backhanded negative political comment in the local press. To them 1 quote Charles Buxton wbo said, "The rule in carving bolds good as to criticismr, neyer cut witb a knife what you can cut witb a spoon." Any cut back in my salary would pay me less than when I started in 1990l, and that wouldn't bother me either. But somebow 1 do reserit being painted as a politician wbo some how is taking advantage of a situation wbich others have suddenly deemed to be unfair to everyone else. Whiere were the critics of today when yesterdays politicians were running amok using government indemnity pledged credit cards at Toronto's best-watering holes? wbile others provided free lodgings in Toronto for their friends, at the expense of taxpayers? But of course, it slipped My memory, wben 1 had pointed out the savings 1 bad made as the MPP for Durham East, in my first fuil year, I was reminded in tbe local press that money- wasn't as short in years pa-st. "The Road to Avonlea" as tbe bride bas been a member of the cast of tbe CBC show for the past two years. The horses and carniages bave often appeared in the show and were brought to Orono from Stouffville. In case you wonder why Orono - the bride's brother lives on Hillcrest Lane in the Village, 'Wm.
