WM Wod Ou . .. . ..... ... ... ... Nursery operation expands 'm operation The Sugarbush Nursery, operated and located on the Staples farrh south of the Village on Highway 115, is an extension of the farmi operation under the care of Jonathan and Joanne Staples. Work has been underway for the past two years for the opening of the nursery this year featuring nursery stock for both the wholesale and retail market. In speaking with Jonathan Staples he said they are featuring It was a Sleeper The results of the Federal Durham Riding Association nomination eectin could, certainly be called a real sleeper. No matter what it could be called it sure had the Con- servatives in high gear the following day gleefully stating that their opposition, the liberals, had selected their third choice candidate te go up against Ross Stevenson ini the federal election expected latter this year. Whether or not that really happened is open to debate but the "Preferential Ballotting process" certainly has many shaking their heads. It almnost cornes to the point that one hesitates to endeavour te explain the rnethod. One thing is sure it does save tirne. There is none of this second and third vote balloting te get a majority andi thus no needt t stick arounti for two te three hours te carry out your duty if the balloting gees beyond the first ballot Under the olti systern of balloting it was one narne on a ballot. If after the first ballot there was not a rajority cf fifty percent plus one then one or two cf the bottern candidates would drop out andi a second one-name ballot would be cast. This coulti be repeated until one candidate did obtain a rnajority of fifty percent plus one. This coulti take a considerable length of time. Under the Preferential System thie voter gets one ballot with al candidates narnes printed on it. The voter insteati of voting for just one candidate marks his Ornamental Grasses which are, stock in containers for ease in becomting popular and perennials both of which are being produced at the local nursery. The nursery also handies bedding plants and a variety of shrubs and trees. Jonathan Staples says it has been a real experience in or- ganizing, the nursery and in, growing their own stock from seeds, seedlings and by budding and separations. He said he hopes to be able to grow most of the ballot First Choice, Second Choice, Third Choice. With this the voter has completed his or her part in the selection of a candidate. What happened last week at the liberal event was that Rosemary Conneli had the greatest number of first choices but flot enough to ring up a majority of fifty percent plus one. None of the candidates could bring their total of second choice to the majority Gf fifty percent plus one. It was not until the third choice count was made that Alex Shepherd broke the magic number of fifty percent plus one. It could be said that Shepherd was the third choice of the majority of members of the Durham Liberal Association. In fact it is a fact. But it is flot unusual for a candidate in election under the old one-ballot at a time system to rest in third or second position on the first ballot but finally make their way to the top in the second or third round of balloting. One might be ternpted to put it this wray: Under the old systern the creamn can rise te the top but under the preferential system you take what you get at the ltime you take. Surely this must be one that some smnart computer whiz could work out a model as to all the options available between the two system. It is quite likely, atter giving it some thought, that there is really little difference from one to the other systemn other than the time element te reach a final decision. Annual event The Durham Children's Services Council holds its annual meeting, May 27th in Building handling. There is a wide selection of perennials -at the Sugarbush Nursery 'as well as the grasses for both full suri, partial sun and shade. - In starting up the nursery Jonathan completed an inde- pendent course in horticulture through Quelph University and fmnds the new venture at the farm most mnteresting.
