Newcastle Community Liaison Group Update 1by John Veldhuis The Newcastle Community Liaison Group bas received several questions which require an answer. Ail the questions presented to us require an answer. The following is a sample of some of the more interesting and difficult questions that we have been asked and they înclude: 1Why do we dig up the material in the first place? Why can it not be left where it is? When you dig it up, how much will you expose to the atmosphere? What is in the dump site? How are the trucks that move this material going to be kept clean? How many trucks will go past, my front door each day? 1How are the workers protected? 1How are die crops and animals and people of Port Granby going to be protected? Can this stuff go into Lake Ontario? Can you pour concrete over the whole site and keep it in place? Seeking cuts to balance Regiona<l budget A Durham Regional committee is studying ways and means of making cuts in Durham's spending te offset recent cuts-in funding from the province. The province has cut $8.3 million from its funding to Durhamn most recently, at a time following when the Region had set its budget and charges to its property owners for the year 1993. Gary Herrema recently referred to the expenditure of $7.3 million spent on the Blue Boxprograîn stating that the service ina> have to undergo cut-backs. Last yearthe Region had reduced the Blue Box pick-up in the urban areas to on ce every two weeks, a service cut that bas been accepted by the general public. Durhamn recycled some 20,000 tonnes of recyables ini 1992-93. It bas been noted that the Region does make $56 a tonne from the sale of collected soft drink boules which costs $225 a tonne to How long is it going to take to remove ail of the material? Wil the excavation take place all year round or will it only be done ini seasons? Do we have to move to a different place while, the excavation is going on? How will we be informed? If there is a problem, will there be compensation for us? These are somne of the questions, but by no means A of the questions, that have been asked and the Newcastle Community Liaison Group has looketi at ail of those questions and bas comne up with either an answer or has presented it for further study to an expert.
