With the mail our universe, we set forth to shop 'tii we drop. Raised on a fuli-time diet of television with its associated Father -Knows Best, quick-fix, happy-ever-after endings, and fast-paced,, bigh-pressure sales pitches (referred to as commeitiais in polite circles), we developed a misguided belief that if our problems can't be solved in thirty-something seconds, someone else wiHl solve them for US. Sunday School begins on Sunday, September 19th. After churvh everyone went to the park for a pot-luck picnic. We had between 75-80 people there. Thanks to Gail Empey for Iooking after the games, which were enjoyed by att. the bills, and stay healthy, advertisers told us, especially women, there were more important tbings to worry about. We bad embarrassing ftakes of dandruff caking our shoulders, our eyelashes and lips were shamefully skimpy, our hips and thighs overly ample, our chests needed lifting and separating, and we had yellow teeth, or even worse ... BAD BREATH! Dishes were spotty, wvindows were streaky, floors were caked with film, and toîlet bowls were nothing more than Club Med breeding spas for germs whicb, it was suspected, would infect innocent children with hideous disease. This had nothing, of course, to do with the fact they often forget to wash after they wipe!, No need to worry, though, girls. Heavy-duty, industrial strength, kill-everything-in-its- path, Mr. Chemical was invented so we could exercise the spots, streaks, film and germs without putting a single wrinkle in our skirts. And, the bonus . .. we then had more time to wash that grey (and our worries) out of our hair, buy new bras, and join aerobics to put more bounce into our lives, knowing that all was well in a cleaner world! But, they then told us that we were laundering dingy grey socks and underwear (have women no pride in their family's underthings?), and that were sendingour men to work with ... oh no! ... ring around the collar! For a time, women went underground with their underwear, hanging,.them in dark, dank basements fearful that neighbours would gossip over that heavenly coffee about ... dum-de-dum-dum . . . grey COMPLETE CAR & TRUCK REPAIRS DIESEL ENiGINES - CUMMINS, DETROIT & CAT RADIO DISPATCHED TOW TRUCKS MOBILE MECHANICAL SERVICE TRUCK R.R. 1, ORONO, ONTARIO 4 MILES NORTH 0F 401 LOB 1Mo ON HWY. 115&35 PHONE (416) 983-9151 iLinduay 35 115 GANARASKA LEATHERCRAFT Rd. But, again, Mr. Chemical camne to the rescue and, riding a white steed, brought wbite, brigbî sunshine back to the laundry rooms of North America, and new-improved, all-powerful cheers were heard across the land. Once again, w hiter-than- white shirts and underwear flapped in the breeze of'suburbia. Somnewhere along the line, though, we got tired of being told how happy we would be with Mr. Chemical. Not only was be flot making it any easier to get (and keep) a man than it was for our grandmothers, but, he wasn't really solving our problems, either. In fact, when we think how much industrial strengtb cleaners are costing us, and the Eartb, there is little to cheer about. Still, has the advertising industry caught on to the shift in consumer consciousness? Perhaps. In recent commercials, the makers of Sunlight now acknowledge that a woman's goal in life is NOT to impresber neighbours, in-laws and bouse guests with floors so spotless tJiey could eat off tbem (who, except a few toddlers and the family pet, ever did anyways?). Yessirce! Women havebetter tbings to do than worry about wbiter-than- white underwear, spot-free dishes, or wonder where the yellow went! Who knows? In time, 'they' just migbt be able to make those heavy days . .. light.
