4 - Orone Weelcly Times, Wednosday, June 9,1993 Orono Atxom soccer tie with Tyrone, The Orono and Tyrone Atom soccer teanis proved to be quite evenly matched in their skills last Monday, May 3l1st and played te a 3-3 tie., Ibe fmrt goal of the gaine was scored by Erin McGlynn of Orono, lier first goal of the season. By half time Orono had scored again and Tyrone had netted their first goal. Action was just as fierce in the second haif with Tyrone tying the score and Orono going ahead again on a goal by Peter Etmanskie, his second goal of the night. -Orono could not hold onto the lead, however, and Tyrone scored the tying goal with only a few minutes left to play. A great gaine! 1On Thursday, June 3, 1993, the Orono Novice # 1 teain collected their first big win. The, season started with a loss te the Orono # 2 team, but with lots of enthusiasm from our girls they won their second gaine played. Ashley Dwyer was our starting pitcher with three up three down. Katie ONeill started the Orono girls off with a walk, Ashley Bickell, Terina West, Jennifer Henderson, Tina Taîsma and Michelle Henderson all getting bits in the first inning to give tbem a 5-0 lead. In the second inning 2 ruas were scored against Ashley Dwyer but Orono # 1 scored 6 more runs back in their up to bat. Sara Alex getting her first big bit of her career and Terina West getting her first home mun witb the bases loaded. Ashley Bickell caine into pitch for the third inning walkîng the first two batters but coming back strong and striking the next three out. Orono still not laying off collected 5 more runs in the bottom of the third, Crystal Ha1ik, Savanah Carberry, the two Asbley's botb getting another bit and Katie O'Neill taking another walk. Great game girls and keep up the team spirit. it's been two straighlut for PeeWee girls Orono Pee Wee girls defeated Courtice Cougars 30 to 16 on Wednesday, June 2nd. The Cougars took an il te 2 score into the second inning but our Orono girls came back with 8 runs including a home run from Diane Jenkins. Aggressive base runniag counted up the score for the home teain giving Orono die lead 16 to 13 after the Sth inniag. The highlight of the inaing was a double play by Melanie Allin assisted by fist basewoman Carol Baxter. The same two girls repeated the same double play in the 6th., Orono offence was in high geai scoring 7 runs in each of the last two innings. Our pitchers had a good game with Carol Baxter pitching the first two innings, Asbley West pitching three strong' innings and Melanie Aluin being the closure. Some key hits in the game came from-Jackie Bull hittiag in two runs i the 5th and Shelda Marie Woods who crossed the plate 4'times berseif. Another good play of the game camne from Dana Drury reacbing first base safely on a third strike dropped baîl and went on te score. Erica Hawkshaw made a nice sboe string catch and Paula Partner made some good throws keeping the Courtice team off- the score sheet. Our next game will be against Hamnpton June l6th at the Fairgrounds., Orono 1i Bantams off to fast 2 and 1 start The Orono I Bantam Basebal teani, sponsored by the Donut Gallery on Highway 115, is off te a fast two and one start, out- scoriag their opposition 19-6. Our players this year include Tomas Wakefield, Brett Maartense, Deepak Angl, Dan Pereira, Scott Sawyer, 'Corey Stapleton, Devon Witberidge, Robert Zachanowicb, Grant Esler, Wade Peacock, Dan Rowe and Alan Lee. Doug Stapleton is our bead coacb with assis tance from Mohînder Angl, Bob Peacock and John Witheridge. Orono I's home opener on May 2th, resulted in a communication m ix-up with C&C, Motors forfeiting a 7-0 victery in Orono's favour. Our second gaine of the season, on May 26th in Stuart Park, Courtice, was yet another win for Orono . All players in attendance had a hbit for Orono while solid pitching combined with impeccable defense froni all positions, made for a 9-1 romp over Shoppers Ding Mail. June 3rd saw our tliird game of the season vwhich was a well fought but unfortunate 5-3 loss to Bowmanville Glass. Again alI players performed to their full potential but feil short in the end. (Teain Representative) Townl legal fees top $0,5 million '91 &'92 During budget discussions for 1993 cou ncil members requested that the Town review legal services that are provided by Dennis Hefferon of the firm Shibley Righton. The review was undertaken from the perspective of any functions presently undertaken that could be tendered to legal firms in the Town of Newcastle or the Region of Durham. The report was also'to focus on the aspect of cost related to the Towns legal services. On Monday a report was received from. the Chief Adminsitrative Officer, L. E. Kotseff in which it is stated the needs of the Town are being well served by the present arrangement with Dennis Hefferon and the firin of Shibley Righton. t is further stated that a change ini approacil is not recommended and could, in fact, prove to be more costly to the Town. 1The report states that over the recent past the Town has required a greater emphasis on the use of legal services many of which have been beyond the control of the municipality. The report noted matters of landfill, Ontario Hydro Goodwill Partnership Award The Region 'of Durham is to receive a Community Partnership Award from the Goodwill Industries at Goodwill's Award Ceremony being held June l-5th. The -award reflects sponsoring, two Goodwill Attended Donation Centre for the purpose of waste reduction tirough reuse. To, date the two Durham Centres have collected 225,000 pounds of reusable materials. Goodwill sells the donated clothing, small appliances, toys, books'and household items in its 21 retail stores in-the Greater Toronto area. as to agreements- and building permnits considerations, changes in provincial legislatîon, changing planning processes, Mosport Park, Port Granby and Aecb and many other items that have come before the municipality in an increasing number. The report that the approach taken for legal services in the Town had not only provided- an excellent service but also a service, of an indisputable professional quality with very positive results for the Town. Total legal expenses in 1991 amounted to $580,703 of which amnount $255, 190 was 100 percent recoverable through subdivision agreements. In 1992 a total amount of $549,580 was spent on legal fees with $100,136 being recoverable 100 percent through subdivision- agreements. The ainount spent to the end of March in 1993 amounts to $99,23 1 of whîch $41,851 is recoverable. Although there was considerable debate on the issue at council the committee is recommending to council that the existing system be continued with the firm of Shîbley Righton.
