The purpose of the facility is to, not only serve the needs of Newcastle but also the Greater Toronto Area and other locations including Peterbrrugh, Lindsay and the Kawarthas. The Lumley letter said it was the intent of the Ministry to complete the current phase of studies and to commence the preliminary design phase for the complete transportation system and leading to the completion of the Environmental Advisory Act. Councs. Scott and O'Toole said the letter was very disappointing and that there was no concemn for the opinion of tbe members of council of Clarington. "the Ministry bas been arrogant", it was stated. Counc. OToole said he boped that the-Region of Durham would support the position of Clarington. It was noted in Lumley's letter that the Region of Durham hlas supported 407 highway thirougb to 115/35 and that the preferred route is registered on the Regional Official plan. Roseneath Carousel operative It is true that things that had gone around are going around again and so will be the case on Saturday, July 17 in Roseneath when the historic Roseneath Carousel rides again. It is the official re-opening following a compleue restoration of the Carousel over the past tbree years. The re-opening is being held at 2 p.m. The day also includes a lunch-time luncheon, a barbecue at 5 p.m. and a dance in the evening. The unique 40 horse menry-go- round is a brightly coloured, musical marvel from days gone by wben it was a it at local fairs and amnusement parks. The Carousel features a vintage Wurlitzer organ built in 1906 and brought to Rosneath in 1932 after being purchased for a modest sumn of $675. The future of the Carousel came into question in the mid 1980s when insurance costs mounted and the amusement piece needed repairs badlyý It was put in storage in 1986. For two years its future was debated but in 1988 a fund-raising commÉittee was formed te seek frnancing for the resteration of tbe bistoric carousel. in total somne $227,000 was î~ througbout tbe conmnunity cluding a grant from tbe AIl the herses bave been repaired, as well as twe boats, mirrors, tbe Wurlitzer ergan, the painting of gear screens along with alI mechanical aspects of tbe carousel. t says a lot for the Roseneatb cemmunity wbere 35 families, organizatiens and businesses adopted a carousel borse for an' ameunt of $5,000. GM Sales drop Ford, Chrylser up General Motors of Canada sold 38,869 cars and trucks in June down some 12.3 percent trom that of 1992. may be costly The newest higbway link between tbe Region of Durham and Metro Toronto, Taunton/ Steeles, could cost the Region an additional $3 million if the province closes out funds for the project at tbe end of 1993. Tbe Taunton/Steeles connection is expected to be complete by the faîl of 1994 at a cost of $28 million. Up te this point the province bas subsidized the project at 70 percent but such subsidy was to cease as at the end of 1993. This would cause the Region te come up with a further $3 million for a bridge over the CPR railroad wbicb is the final phase of the connecting road project. Tbe Chairman of Public Works bas suggested the loss of the subsidy could cause the delay of other Regional road projects. A mint o f good news is that the tender price for tbe railway ,bridge bias come in some $2 million less than anticipated. Regional Chairman Gary Herrema bas suggested that he may resign from the GO Transit board due te tbe cancellation of GO train service into Wbitby on non-rush heurs. in meeting witb Lynn McLeod, Ontario Liberal leader , on a visit sbe made to Durham recently he said the GO cutbacks were foisted on the transit system by the govemmient. He said the GO0 board had no say in wbat manner cuts would be miade. Herremna suggested that cuts in capital projects would bave been more logical tban cuts in service as bias been made te the Town of Whithy.
