mmC4 - 'Oroio Weekly limer, Wodnesday, August i1, 1993- Dmonut Gallery Bantams Orono Basebali Raffle end week with 3-1 record winners,-announced The Donut Gallery Bantamns put an end to the tough week going 3- 1. Our first game on August 2nd was played in Newcastle against Champion Teamwear. Ourfirst pitcher Brett Maartense gave us 4 good innings of' woîk only allowing 3 runs while chalking up 3K's. Our second pitcher Tomas Wakefiel came in to execute the last 3 innings striking out 6 of 10 batters while letting in, 1 run and took home the win, 6-4. On August 3rd the Bantams played a double header, the first. part was played against SonBon Homes (Orono Il). Al looked lost for the Donut Gallery squad until the 7th inning when we were down 7-3, but we battled back with an explosive inning piling up 5 runs to- capture the lead 8 -7 in an exciting nail biter. Credit goes out to Dan Pereira who knocked in the game winner with bases loaded. Our pitchers again were throwing well, -Bîett pitched the first 3 innings letting in-7 runs, but came back in the 7th to prove himself leuing in no runs and took the win. Tomas pitched 3 innings, and was spcctacular striking out 8 of 1l batters, dominating in his stretch on the mound, the final score 8-7; The second part of oui double header was an exhibition against the Orono Rep Peewees. The Peewees had a strong first inning with 4 runs but then the Bantans' took over and won I11-4. On August Sth we played at Orono against National Home Video the No. 1 team in oui league, our pitchers Tomas and Brett took the mound again but we let down by a defense that made too many costly errors which ended our undefeated streak at 6 in league play which makes oui record 8- 3-1. Also with 1 win in exhibition play. The final score was 14-2 as Orono 1 was out hit, and unfortunately didn't show sig ns of ability until the dying' moments of the gaine. Our next gaine is in Orono at 6 p.m. August 12th. In closing the Bantams squad would like to thank Niek our friend at the Donut Gallery; Thanks for the donuts!!! C.S. (Team Representative) Orono Novice # 1- Team add two, more wins Coach West takes Orono Novice # 1 teamn te another win On July 26, 1993 the Orono girls travelled to Courtice to play Roy's Enterprises. Going through the whole batting order the first inning and ending the tenth batter with Melonie Allin Who hit a grandslamn home run put Orono into a 8-0 lead. Melissa Barchard was oui starting pitcher ,and did aý fine job with getting a couple of strike outs on her record. Ashlcy Bickell made a tricky catch to get the fîrst out of the game, and showed her buddies how easy it was. As the gaine went on and Orono over ruled, Terina West made a fantastic catch to end the second inning. In the third Orono let up on the bats but went back with great defensive moves. Ashley Bickeli, was now on the pitcher's mound and struck ouf 32 of 7 batters and allowing only one girl to walk. The top of the fourth came and so did the girls, the bats wcre back into swing and around the oider thcy went collecting 7 more runs. Dcfenisively, they came back with 3 up, 3 down, two great catches, one by Mlelissa Barchard and another by Melonie Allun, Ashley Bickçll received her third strike ouf of the game. To end dhe game for Orono Melissa Barchard hit a home run to dlean off the bases for a 24-2 win. The batting stats are as follows: W SID T HR A. Dwyer M. Alun A. Walton A. Bickell M. Barchard T. Things didn't look good for Orono # 1 at first only having the requircd seven players. But with a great gai-e from pitcher Ashlcy Dwycr and a much improved Amny Walton Orono is experiencing record numbers in the houseleague basebaîl thîs year. AIL the teams are doing very well in their various divisions tnd having a good time to boot. This thanks to the many volunteers, coaches; sponsors etc, that make it ahi possible. We have two teamns in every division froin T-Bail to Bantain for a total of 12 teams (170 players). When coaches and umnpires are taken into account we have in excess of 200 people involved with baseball in oui community this season. It is exciting to see the interest in the sport but to keep this many people outfitted and equipped is expensive. Sponsors play a big role in helping offset operating costs. Many thanks to this year's sponsors: Hourglass, Steve's Diesel, Allinbrook Feeds, Norm's Delicatessen, Orono Fuel & Lumber, Hamiltons Insurance, Stutt's Pharmacy, Pisani Construction, an d a special thank you to, Orono Town Hall Board, Armstrong's IGA, Hunt's Photo, and our new sponsors, Donut Gallery and SonBon Homes. catching, on the'offensive side, Orono # I's answer to the Blue Jays, Ricky Hlenderson, a well rested Jennifer Henderson, off two weeks holidays came to hit. The difference is made up through fundIraising whichi went very well again this year.
