According te Eva Nichols who bas been co-ordinator of the program states that the education ministry statistics show that the boards are the most cost-effective ini providing-the service. She said due te many of the programns provided by the scbool can be used for the adult literacy program, the only expense is the instructor's salary., Programs run through the boards of education system cost the province $216 per student wbicb compares -witb $1,912 for similar programs provided by Community Colleges. Even volunteer-run programs cost more, an estimated $962 per student. It isstated that these figures corne from an inventory of aduit basic education done in Mrs. Nichols has pointed out that the local boards of education do flot have to pay administrative salaries and are able to share supplies and books. Under these conditions local boards become more cost-efficient states Mrs. Nichols. There has been no final word passed down from the Ministry as to the future of the program and throughwhat avenue it is te be delivered. The board is now providing aduit basic literacy programns to close to 150 students across the jurisdiction.
