- Omno WeekhjrTime~~ W.dnosday~, S.pt.mber8~, 1993 Another aàdventure in Clarke Two weeks ago it was the Great Ganaraska Countryside Adventure now biled as a great success. The week-end before you could bike out of Orono for Peterborough to be entertained and then return the following day. ibhis week-end itÊs another great adventure in this cemmunity with the annual Durham Central Agnicultural Fair held in Orono. ICs filed with activities for ail age groups whether it be harness racing, sewing, cake sale, chicken and rabbit displays and competitions to the demolition derby. It would take toc much space to touch on ail the exhibits and entertainment that wil make this fair another "must see event". A number of new features have been added this year some with an attraction of those of senior years and others that should strike a note of the teenagers wîth the Teen dance. Most of ail the Orono Fair is an opportunîty to once again visit with your neighbour. It ail starts Thursday evening. Should have known betterý It looks as if Mice IHarris, leader of the Ontario Conservatives has gone into hiding. Well he should after the spectacle with Helle Hulgaard and her misguided plan to leave a $41 ,500 a year job to go te welfare with her two children. Mike Harris, should have known, even wýithout checking, that Hulgaard could in no way be better off financially on welfare. No doubt he saw what he thought was an opportunity to grab some publicity through welfare bashmng which seems to be an increasing target for those wanting to slash out at cost of govemment. There is no doubt there-are some inequities and somne fraudulent dlaims that do slip through but the system cannot just be thrown out leaving people destitute on the streets. Surely as Canadians and Ontarians there is aspirit of sharing with those being less fortunate. Mike Harris did his part> 'd hiiself no good and he did the welfare system no good. A commitment of $1.33 Over the last few months we have witnessed the disfavour of unions and federations with the Bob Rae gcverpnment in Ontario. From the uproar and the words spoken it has been the unions and federations that were solely responsible for the election of Bob Rae and bis MPPs through the generous contribution of money and volunteer time. The unions were the backbone of the party and as such they deserve better from the elected NDP government. The daily press last week reports that the NDP bas suffered another blow from the ranks of labour. Unionized workers ut Ontario Hydre have overwhelmingly voted to cut ties with the NDP gevemment and that includes total cutting off cf financial funding. This is where the $ 1.33 commitment comes in and it works this way. Local 1000 cf the Canadian Union of Public Employees represents 18,000 unionized hydre workers who have veted fer dutting ties with the NDP party.. The financial contribution frem the Union te the Ontarie NDP was $24,000. Accerding teo ur eutdated math systemn that figures eut to $1.33 per union member cf Local 1000. What an investmnent that is in the NDP. It hardly warrants headlines on the front page or special treatrnent from the Rae gevemnment. And further Local 1000 waited until after the election cf the Rae govemrment te become affiliated with the NDP. One would have tosay it is a cheap trip the unions are loeking for afld a paltry $1.33 doesnt buy much te-day and in titis case certainly should net. Nature can provide o nly so much The recent decision to eliminated fishing in the Grand Banks off Newfoundland is a clear indication that nature cannot be ignored in the plans cf man teo continue te inhabit thîs world. The disappearance cf the fish stock dîd net happen over night and aIl the blarne cannot be place at the feet of foreign fishermen whe only touch a cerner of the grand banks. Ne one over the past decade was prepared te maie a decisien that may have provide a fishery on a lesser scale but on a continuai basis. Neither the polîician, the scientists or fisherman would step forward and say lets speak eut as it is. Today unempicyment in the Maritimes and Newfoundland will rise beyond belief. It is nethealthy for mankind te be idle. But we found ne middle ground te work with nature as far as the fishery was concernied. The result ceuld be mest disruptîve. Ced fis hing around Newfoundland has existed since 1498 when the istand was discovered by John Cabot.' Told Twýice February 1967 The Orono Park Board held their first meeting of the year on Tuesday evening with ahl members present. If ycu are really interested in the welfare and-,well-being cf Seniors in Nursing Homes. Why did Bihl 101, An Act te Amend Certain Acts concerning Long - Ternim Care. pass in the Provincial House? Seniors now have te pay up te $372 per month extra te liive in long-termn care homes. The Rae Govemment ailowed rental control increases cf 4.9% for the general public and impesed increases of 32% for Seniors living in long care faiities. Most cf our Seniors survived a depression in the thirties without the benefit cf U.IC. or Welfare. They worked hard al cf their lives, asked for nothing and saved se they could pay their way until death. Mr. Milîs, your government bas taken away their digniity and placed themn in a "poor house" situation . . . SHAME! Seniors living in semi-private rooms have been moved to wards. You have confused and frightened them ... a SHAME! 1 As an Ontarian 1 am proud cf these people. They kept Ontario alive duning the depression, served in the Second World.War'se we could live in peace, worked long hard heurs te provide for their families and did net ask for gevernment handouts. They are old and cannot speak for themselves se you take from them ..SHAME! For this Tax Grab "Gutless Bob Rae" should have left the Seniors alone and deducted 32% from Welfare payments. Please Mr. Milîs do net cal yourself a "senior" you are a cruel, thcughtless politician. More Taxes next week?.. take care.
