4 Orono Wèekly Times; Wodnesday~ Septetnbor S, 1993 U At the, Stevenson barbecue, Blackstock Perrin Beatty caught timne to one in attendance for the event. visit the annual Ross Perrin Beatty and Ross Stevenison barbecue in Stevenson were an their way Blackstock Iast week and ta, address the gathering at the above has'a conversation with tii-ne of the photo. From A round HmE Must start to finish To complete this column 1 must first get started for there is no end without a beginning but on this occasion the beginning seems ta be somewhat difficult. t is not that there isn't something ta write about. Yes we were off ta Lindsay, Yes we were off ta Presquile and Yes we were off ta Prince Edward County. Let's start with Lindsay and the Kawartha Summer Theatre on Friday evening. t was a must. It was the presentation of "Gershwin First Persan" live on stage at Academny Theatre. - The eight on-stage cast presented such numbers as "Fascînating Rhythm", "Lady Be Good", "I Got Rhythm", "Swanee', "Summertime" and the list of G eorge Gershwi n tunes went on and on. t was a varied programi and dance especially in a late-per- formance number was out- standing. It often amazes one the talent of those on stage bath in dance and music and this was s0 with the Gershwin show in Lindsay. t is interesting that most of -the cast had credits with theatre in Toronto where tickets can cost upwards -of, $100.00. Yet at Lindsay the modest charge of $ 14.50 including tax is the top price. The Gershwin show ciosed on Saturday as did the summer theatre program. Sa events change came Sunday and as you might'guess it was Bunting and I off again at seven a.m. ta see, if by chance, we couid make it 288 for Bll reaching out for that 300 magîcal number. Presquile was the destination following a reported Barred Owl. First we check the log book for recent sightings and were taken back with three sightings an Saturday of an American Avocet. The Barred Owi had a date of three weeks ago sa likely was off somewhere else. We cauid airnost taste 288 as it was oniy 24 hours and less that the Avocet had been sighted. t would be a fi-st for Bll and 1. Off ta Beach One parking lot ta find it three-quarter full of cars. Then tripping along the beach ta the south-west point we find at least fifty birders ahl waiting patiently for the Avocet. Now the Avocet is 'a rather ganglee shore bird, quiet tail, with long legs and needie-like long curved bill, 20 inches in iength. t is rather comman but not in this area of Ontario. t does nest in the western portion of the continent For two hours we waited, for the appearance of the bird but in the mearitime had plenty of other shorebirds ta watch as they flitted about the lake's edge. The Most interesting ta watch have ta be the Ruddy Turnstones Bowmanville Business and Professional Women's Club The Bowmanville Business and Professional Women's Club helId their last meeting on Junel7th before a summer reprieve. The meeting was a pleasant alternative to the regular dinner meeting with a pot luck dinner at President Roxy Barnies' home. Scrumptious, home-made fare was enjoyed by all and then club members held their business meeting. When the business was completed the club members viewed.a fashion presentation of styiish knit wear clothing from an ail Canadian company. The annual District Meeting of the B. P. W. After dinner District Director Nancy Bass will speak about "Femninism in the 90's". Ifyou as they flip over stones iooking for food and there were a considerabie number of these birds present on Sunday. Then one lone Short-billed Dowitchers neyer stopped pradding its long bill inta the water edge for food. The movement somewhat resembles a sewing machine. In fact this cantinuous quick probbing is one means of identification of this bird. But ail shorebirds are busy little beavers and they wiii likeiy be around-Presquile for another week or two. The Avocet? Well it neyer showed up and 288 rather slipped away for the time being. There wili be another time. Bill and 1 made connectian with Donna at the 401 interchange inta Presquile and while Bil returned ta, Orono I was then on my way ta the Wrights and their new abode at the Lake on the Mountain. No sooner had we arrived than it was proposed byGrandson Jamie that it was a, great day for golf and that we could at least play nine hales. Why not. We don't get dawn ta the Picton area that much. It was nine hales on what was a crowded course. Bath Jamie and I had a few gaod shoots but there were more duffsp that really pull down, the score. That is why we neyer take out a score card. You only remember the gaod shats., There were a few body aches and pains came Monday. We did get started and this is the ending. would like ta make dinner reservations please cali Helen Devitt at 623-3915 by Monday, Sept. l3th. Being a member of B. P. W.
