The big, orange buses have begun once again to lumber along the roads. Schoolyards that have lain dormantfor three months are once again alive with thesounds and activities of children. The smell of new books permeates the stuffy air of -a classroom that bas been closed up to the summer breezes. The begînning of school always has a rather sad note to it. With it cornes an end to the freedom of long, sunny days. talso bears a grim remînder that the cold of winter is just a few, -short months away. But, entering once again through the doors of academia,- also is able to provoke a host of other emotions as well. For the first year university or college student, it brings-a sense of freedom and maturity. Away from home. A new surrounding. The first-day-of-the-rest-of-your- -syndrome. It is with trepidation that the kindergarten student enters the building. This student is ready to fiee at the slightest sound and run back to the safety of clinging to a parent's leg. For those moving through the elementary school years, it is a matter of realizing you are slowly moving ahead. Slowly, but surely, you know that you are nearing the title of "top of the heap." With every grade you advance, there is a larger group of people who are younger than you . This gives you a sense, of power, and you allow yourself to feel a little smug. Th7e flrst year of high school is scary. NeW faces. New teachers. And a host 'of horror stories from Soon, though you realize that it is flot quite as'bad as they ail make it out to be.' The last year of high sehool though,-the old fears retum. Now it's decision urne. Do you continue your education... and if so, where? Are you making a correct career decision? Will you be able to keep your grades up to meet the tough demands of the school you applied to? School is about learning. But, like it hias been said numerous times before... Learning isn't al done from a textbook. Being present in school is a learning experience in itself. A lot of the stuff that we learnedfrom books throughout schools may escape us now. But the lessons that you leamed in dhe halls of the school that taught you to deal with life are always gomng to remain. David Black. of Newtownille United Church, hopes that Wednesday's success ful event will be the first in an annual event. At the recent annual meeting of the Ontario Public School Teachers' Federation, Gene Lewis, president, suggested that elementary teachers stop working as coaches, choir directors and club organizers.. The president said teachers must maintain their health as they deal with larger class sizes, frozen salaries and fewer classroom resources. The head of the Northum- berland and Newcastle Feder- ation, who attended the annual conference, has been reported to state that there may be fewer extracurricular activities within the loc al system, Northumberland and Newcastle due to the provinces' social contract. Harvey Balakofsky states that teachers may have too rnuch regular work to handle outside activities due -t class size inceases. The Ontario Ministry states that class sizes in Ontario will increase by 1.5 student this year. Mr. Halakofsky is of the opinion that the Northumberland and Newcastle systemn could rise as much as five students per classroom. Mr. Balakofsky said the suggestion of reduced extra- curricular work with students is not meant to be a work -to-rule cali. He said a work-to-rule cali would be irresponsible and illegal at the present time. The president of the local federation aiso suggests thtat if the teachers go along with the social contract changes with little complaint it would look as if they are handling the extra work in the ciassroom with no problem. Mr. Balakofsky did say that reducing extracurricular work would pain many teachers. 1Following Mr. Lewis' corn- ments as to reduction in extracurricular work, Dave Cooke, Minister of Education, accu sed the teachers of throwing a "mini temper tantrum" and over-stating the effects of the social contract. The Minister also said such action would have a negative impact on students as well as on the reputation of the teachers.
