A mare and itsfilly- Herîtagae Farm Show shown to be success in first year 'Me Heritage Farm Show at the Durham Central Fair was initiated and supperted by a group of People interested in preserving artifacts of rural farmn life. Ail of the exhibitors appreciated and thanked Len Helpard of the "Werld of Wheels" magazine for bis genereus contribution to our 'Exhibitors Friday Night Barbeque".- Therewere at the show 74 tractors, engines, threshers and artifacts and with ail that countiess owners and helpers Le make it interesting for ail te see it work. The success of titis show is evident by the interest created and we would appreciateç it if more people with Heritage Farm Equipment etc. would join. Saving and restoring this etqiipment helps put in Lime and imr'oves skills. Clarington CLG Update by John Veldhuis There is one question that does not -seem te want te go away. This is the question "why can the material flot be left where iL is. What is wrong with the Port Granby dump site anyway. Why can't we just leave it where l is?' We have dealt with this question on several previeus occasions but since iL, keeps cropping up, we wil deal with it one more time. The material in Port Granby Low-Level Radioactive site is a mixture of low-level radioactive waste which came from the Eldorado Refinery in Port Hope from 1955 until the 1980s as well as toxic material particularly arsenic, which is a bi-product of the refining process. In addition te that, there are varieus ether wastes, including chienine gas that bas been dumped in the Port Granby site over the years. 'Mis material cannet stay where iL is. IL is leaking into Lake Ontario the source cf drinking water for 8.5 million people. The site dees flot meet any of today's more stringent envirenmental and health criteria and there is a decommissioning order eut from the Atomic Energy Centrol Board which indicates the material bas te be moved. Your federal government bas taken responsibility for the removal of this material. The Town of Clarington bas repeatedly stated their position that they want this material, te which we are an unwilling host, removed frem Port Granby. We have asked Golder Consulting te do a study te see wbat it would cost and what weuld be involved in keeping the material (the wastes) in Port Granby. They concluded that the matenial te be left there would need remedial action costing over 32 billion dollars for the 10,000 years that, this site would have te be kept under control. That is in 1990 dollars which would make the amount, far above tbe 32 billion dollars estimated. How much we de net know, but the the reader can guess and work eut the estimated increase for him or herseif. The engineers said that the method of keepingthe matenial there would be te build a containment wall of concrete and this would only be good for 35 te 50 years. The estimated cost in the 1990 dollars was 60 million dollars. If we estimate that it would actually last from 50 years ther than the more conservative 5 years, iL still cornes Le an ïncredible amount of monecy and I do net believe the taxpayers are willing te subject themselves te that kind of future costs. Se readers, these are some of the reasens why the material cannet be left where it is. We have a full report on that and it is available for you, for the asking, just drop into the office. on King Street in Newcastle Village and we will be glad te give you one free of charge and talk witb you about your concerns and your ideas about removing the low- level radioactive and toxic wastes from Port Granby.
