8 ~ Orono WoekIy Times, Wednesday, September 15, 19~3 '~ J Big Brothers Kite Festival by Carol-Ann Oster Some people take the term "Go fly a kite" seriously. A number of these people sbowed at Courtice Secondary School on Saturday afternoon for the Big Brothers Kite Festival. Approximately sixty people showed up for'the event. Eigbteen of the participants built their own kites. These kites'were entered in a contest -and prizes were awarded in a number of categories. Other contests were held in the areas of ighest flying contest and fastest bite Up.. Entertainment was provided by Dolly the Dancing Cow and An Open Letter The Organizers of the Great Ganaraska Country Adventure Thanks 1.0 your efforts, the weekend of August 28/29 was a celebration of our community. The Great, Ganaraska Country Adventure was a "sbowcase" for mucb of the talent and natural resources within Clarke Townsbip and its villages. Hidden treasures were revealed that even some long time residents didn't know existed. 11. provided us with an opportunity to, welcome visitors into our community, and enabled us to sec it (very favourably) througb their eyes. The success of an event like this depended on the co-operation and participation of bundreds of volunteers. Farmers, artisans, residents, smalbusiness operators and community organizations al "conspired" 1.0 create a buge tourist attraction rigbt bere, at home. Rather than just talk about the need for economic development and tourism, you did it! 11. clearly demo ns trates w hat can. be do ne witb some imaginaion, lots of energy and a'bealthy dose of community spirit. Over the years, our community bas bad more than its share of env ironmental threats and plans Queen's Park Report- fromn Gord Mis, MPP Durham East by Ward 1 Councîllor, Larry Hannab,, wbo sang a number of songs. Children were invited tw bave their faces painted or a caricature drawn. The event was a big success for Big Brothers. They would like 1.0 remind the community that there are still 12 unmatched Little Brothers. An information session is scheduled for the end of'the montb. This unique kite constructed by Carolyn Mejia of Bowmanville took lst place in the "Most Unique Kite" category. for overdevelopment. We bave responded to those challenges and worked bard te preserve the bind of community that others could enjoy on their weekend tours. 11. was refreshing 1.0 be able 1.0 participate i sucb a positive event ratber than being forced behind a placard or preparing a presentation to protest yet another assault on our community and its environment. 1A particular note of thanks goes to Elva Reid and Kristen McCrea whose vision, organizational skills and bard work brougbt it al together. Encore! Yours truy, David Scott, Local Councillor Ward 3 Fire Cails from Orono Fire calis for the Municipality of Clarington Fire Department Station 3, Orono for the weeks August. 26 - September 8 were: August 27th at 2:20 p.m., cal 1.0 a rubbish fire at 7500 Highway 115. August 29th at 2:14 p.m., received a 911 cail on Soper Road. September 4th at 2:14 p.m., called te a rubbisb fire at 245 Tamblyn Road. - Last week at Queen's Park saw the summer committee scbedule come 1.0 an end. Ail commnittee schedule come 1.0 an end. Al commîttee work will resume again once the House retumns for the Fall Session on September 27th. On September 2lst, ahl government members will go to Ottawa for a four day retreat, prior 1.0 the Legisiature opening. Undoubtedly there will bc bad press about it, spending money when there is lots of space in Toronto etc.. .. but the trudh is, not very much is achieved 'when retreats and the discussion that flows out of them, are held close to the office we work out of normally. We tried it once, and it failed miserably, because people were forever missing doing their work instead of taking part ini the daily workshops etc. As far as the costs go, each member will be picking Up their own expenses, s0 it isn't going to be a"freebie~'. Since I will be travelling back from Ottawa on Friday, September 24th, I will not be in the constituency office that day. Normal Friday hours for me will resume on October lst. This is also the day I start the new Fal Schedule of "Talking it Over with Gord" aired weekly on Channel 10 through Rogers Cable T.V. We have already lined up some interesting guests and topics for the new season, I hope you wil become a regular viewer of a completely non-partisan program. Have you driven on the 401 rece ntly? The new "bilingual" signs are up those that reati EXIT/SORTIE, and, DOWNTO WN/CENTRE VILLE just in case you didn't notice them. 1 think they -are big improvement over the old type sign they replaced. This method of highlighting the actual exit in yellow wording, leaves no.doubt in the mind of the motorist looking for positive direction while travelling at 100 kms. an hour. I must have received at least 30 letters of complaint over the signs, when it.was the main issue a few months back. Strangely, or is it, no one bas written 1.0 me to complain about the irresponsible fear-mongering of Mike Harris, Leader of the Ontario Conservatives, and bis stupid press conference where he announced side-by-side with Ms. Helle Hulgaard, that welfare payments were better than a job paying $4 1,000 a year. The lengths some people will go to try to discredit the NDP government amaze me. But perhaps even more amazmng to me, is just how selective the letters of complaint seem to be! On Labour Day, I celebrated 3 years as the MPP for Durham Fast. I must. say that on the night, of September 6tb 1990, 1 looked te what the future held for mie wîth some degree of trepidation. The road since then hasn't been easy by any means, but it bas been a super experience, whicb unfortunately isn't shared 'by many. I know I wil always be thankful 1.0 have been given the opportunity te serve everyone, which I wil continue to do, te the best of my ability, in the year ahead. Prior 1.0 my own election I often wondered, as many of you probably did, just what an MPP did. Once elected 1 vowed 1.0 correct that shortcoming, through the courtesy of the local newspapers, by way of my "Report from Queen's Park". This week's report is number 137 wo you. Recently I conducted a transportation survey in the northern part of the ridîng. 1 couldn't have picked a worse time 1.0 do it! Simultaneously, the Minster of Transport announced cuts in the GO Train Service and other cost saving measures. The main question asked in the survey was, "Do you see a need for bus links with Whitby GO Station?" 88.95% of responses received said "Yes". 5.34% were not in approval, while 5.06% were flot sure it would help at ail. Despite the cut s as announced, I wrote 1.0 the Mînister of Transport, gave him details of the survey and how positive the response had been, and requested that he carefully consider extending bus service from Port Durham NDP hosts Open House 1Durhiam residents are invited te meet their local Federal New Democratic Party Candidate Lucy Rybka-Becker at an open bouse to be beld on Saturday, September 18, 1993. The open house will bc beld from 11 a.m'. 1. 1 p.m. at the Durham NDP Campaign Office, 68 King St. E., (Main Floor Veltri Complex), Bowmanviile. "I arn looking forward 1.0 meeting eacb and every one of you and bearing your concerns," says Ms. Rybka-Becker. "You can drop in to bave a light refresbment and learn more about the NDP Jobs Plan - Canada works wben Canadians Work! " For more information please call (416) 433-7092 or (416) 623- 4969. Perry and other communities in the vicinity, te the proposed Oshawa GO Station, tbe Oshawa Centre, and 1.0 the Whitby GO Station, and that the'service bc on a regular daily basis. Last week, I had a meeting witb officials from the Ministry of Healtb about the need for new radiation treatment facilities at Oshawa General Hospital. Tbe meeting was a follow up 1.0 the 15,000 plus name petition I presented in the Legislature on behaîf of. the "Oshawa Cancer Treatment Now" Committee. Another meceting is planned following a ministry evaluation of my presentation and statistics. I know that health costs bave 1.0 be contained, but the growth of population in this area and the încreased incidence of cancer, demand consideration of a radiation facility, and that is my goal. Until next week - take care- of one another.
