The Applefest is being featured froim 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, September l9th. There wil be apple cider sales, pioneer crafts and foods, horse and wagon'rides, the Chandos Heritage Festival, along with other events. Asthma outreach programs The Lung Association is to continue its successful Asthma Outreach Program fir asthmatics in the Durham Region. The program is funded by a grant from, Glaxo Canada Inc. and aims to reduce hospital admissions and improve the quality of life for those suffering from asthma. The sessions operate on a rotating cycle, three evenings a week, at different centres. Respiratory therapists will review all aspects of asthma and its treatment. Sessions begin on September 13, 20 and 27th. For more information cail 436-1046. County loses mental health service Northumberland residents with serious mental ilînesses have been shut out of psychiatric beds in Peterborough states Dr. Alan Worthington, director of the Northumberland Mental Health Centre. Peterborough Civic has only two psychiatrists on staff. The hospital has been unable to attract further psychiatrists to- the hospital and as a result only patients of doctors having hospital privileges are being admîtted. Northumberland patients have to be directed to Kingston where the situation is some better. Donation buys guns for police A mystery Cobourg donor of $30,000 to the Cobourg Police department has provided funding for new guns, ammunition and body armour for the local police. 0f the amount $23,000 was used to buy 23 Glock 9 millimeter semi-automatic pistols and extra ammunition. The remaining portion of the money is to be used to purchase body armour for four auxiliary officers. The new guns will replace the .32 caliber revolvers that have been in use. Councillors to reduce remunerat ion by 5 % Members of the Port Hope coundil have agreed to reduce their pay by 5 percent for the remainder of 1993. The five-percent amounts to some $150 per councillor. Staffer to get trustee seat The Port Hope and District Hospital Board has invited a member of the hospital's staff to sit on the board of trustees. and as a full voting member. The move is a one-year tria to be reconsideredat the end of the terra. It is believed that this is a first in the province. Cobourg losing floating restaurant The Cobourg harbour is to, lose the floating restaurant, The Edward. 1The owners are giving up die business and will seil the ship for scrap valued at $ 190,000. Gets funds for housing upgrade Port Hope is receiving a grant of $59,000 from the Ministry of Housing for upgrading 12 assisted-housing units. The units are to be made more energy efficient. Work has already started. Considers returning to homeland Ian Chung, owner of Total Convenience store in Cobourg says he is ready to return to his homeland, South Korea. His store has been broken into three times over the past four months even though he had added alarms and video cameras. The most recent entry was through a one metre hole made in the was hroom from the outside. Thieves stote $27,000 worth of cigarettes. Hospital plans some shutdowns Cobourg hospital may have to close some of its departments for a day at a time this year to satisfy the social contract payroll cuts. Staff are expected to take four days off this year without pay along with other days off in the next two years. There will bc no layoffs at the Cobourg hospital which bas elected to use $250,000 from'its budget surplus to meet its payroll savings amounting to $423,000 in 1993. The hospîtal had a surplus of $487,000 from the most recent year of operation which ended ini March. To extend Oshawa bike trail -- .City council in Oshawa has given approval for the extension of the Oshawa Creek bike trail which will now reach south to Lakeview Park at the lakefront. The trail is then to travel west to the Pumphouse park area which section is to compleue in the spring of 1994. The total cost of both projects will reach $350,000 of which amount the provincehas provided $210,000. Fisherman hooks human body? A fisherman trolling in Lake Ontario last week 13 kilometers due south of the Darlington Nuclear station is believed to have hooked a human body. The body slipped off the hook before being landed. Police continue to invesigate the report. The lake is some 1000 metres deep at the point where the incident happened. Police divers can only penetrate to 30 meires in depth. Housing starts down in Durham Housing starts were down in August over that of last year in the three Durham municipalities of Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington. New starts dropped by 21 percent with a total of 121 new units in the three municipalities. Most of the August drop was due to a slowdown in subsidized housing. The issue of building permits did however increase in August. Oshawa hospital to close 160 beds for five weeks To meet the conditions of the social contract Oshawa General Hospital is to close 160 beds in theelective surgical area. The closures are to Lake place during non-peak periods and the, move will save $1.1 million of the $3.6 million the province has ordered. Staff are to take holidays when the beds are closed. The hospital and staff have also corne to terms in that staff wilM take four unpaid holidays during the yeaf, a further saving of $800,000.
