The hymn, "0 God Our Hetp in Ages Past" was sung fotlowed by the Prayer of Self- Examination anti the Words of Assurance. A tapeti anthem, "In The Beginning" sung by the Statter Brothers was playeti. The chuttiren were inviteti to corne up to the front, Rev. Black asked, how many were glad to bc here today, ail hands went up. He asked, how many were here last week, again ail handis weal up. He thien asked themn what the narne of the tape played Iast weýek was. They knew more than ij id, and answered, "How the World was Created". 'When asked why the world was created? Their answer was, to give man and woman, a place to live.. The children's hymn was "Bigger Than att My Problems", The Scripture reading was from Genesis 4:1-8;, and 25-26. The sermon was titled, "Human Like Eve". The story of Adàm and Eve is about the two people created at the beginning of Creation., We have heard the story so often, that we forget thiâ they were real people, lie us, with the same passions and fears as us. They were not différent, but just like us. Eve was a woman who faced fle as we do, she made mistakes, felt sorrow and happiness, as we do. Eve knew the joy of childbirth with the birth of her first son, Cain. She feit it was by the Lord's help that she gave birth to Cain. We have ahl experienced this feeling as we have looked into the face of our newbomn child. Eve was the best miother she knew how to be. We know that Eve grieved and felt the emptiness in the loss of her son, Abel. She also feit guitt and wondered how she might have prevented Cain from kiuling Abel. If only she had been able to keep Cain from losing his temper. If only she had been there, she might have stopped it from happening. If only! How often have we said this? Eve was not responsible for Cain's actions, Cain was an adutt, he was responsible for his own actions. The Bible says that Cain was one hundred and twenty-nine years old. Cain atone must bear the responsibility and guilt for what he did. Parents often feei the guilt for what their children have done. Parents are responsible for giving their children a good upbringing, a sense of right and wrong. We as a congregation, take a sacred oath at the time of Baptism, to see that a child has help in receiving a proper upbringing. This is not a lifetime sentence. As a parent there cornes a tîme when the child must leave home, go out on their own, mnake their own decisions, some choose wisely, some foolishty, but it must be their own decision, right or wrong. It is natural'for us to want the best for them, it is not easy to ]et go. When Cain slew Abel, Eve went on living, she was able to rise above the pain and the shame of what had happened. The symbol of this was that Eve gave birth to a third son, Seth. This shows that God, did not give up on Eve as a mother. Her guilt was setf-imposed, she had done nothing to deserve it. It is hard to give up self imposed guilt, perhaps it is because we don't like to admit we are not needed. There is appropriate andi in-appropriate guitt. In-appropriate guilt is when you, are not guitty and not responsibte. Seth was not given as a replacement for Abel but to be a symbol of life carrying on. The hymn, "Stand By Me" "Lord of Our Growing Year-s." Sunlday, October 3rd will be Commnunion Sunday.
