Reserving swimming classes for Oshawa residents With four to five hundred kids on a waiting list for swîmmîng at Oshawa pools an Oshawa councillor wants places at the Oshawa pool reserved only for Oshawa residents. He said hie knows that children from other centres including Courtice are enrolled at the Oshawa pools pusbing out Oshawa kids. He said witb the building of the new south Oshawa pool this condition will have to be considered. Richer than anticipated Buzz Hargrove, president of the CAW bas stated that General Motors bas told hlm that the new agreement with Chrysler was ficher than was anticipated. GM bas said that they make more parts for their products in their own plants and want to see these plants protecte. Goose hunt season The dates of the Ontario Goose hunt was in some kind of turmoil this year for the first Part of September but appears to have straigbtened for the latter part. The Southern Ontario season runs from September 25 to December along with latter dates from January l4h to 22nd excluding areas WMU 61, 62, 63, 65, 66, 67, 69B and 85 and 86. 401 fatal car crash Traffic on Higbway 401 east bound was backed up for about two hours off the Newtonville interchange due to a two car ý_accident. A west bound car crossed the median and crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer. Both vebicles rolled into a ditch catcbing on tire. One victim escaped being treated for minor injuries while the other victim's body bas been sent to the forensic sciences in Toronto for identification. Free training program There's a new local skill training program beginning this montb by the Northumberland Information and Training Advisory Committee. It's an attempt to train local unemployed people about the skiils that employers'are Iooking for. The course is to begin this month and is free to any country resident who collects unemployment insurance or registered with the jobsOntario program. Port Hope Aquatic Club takes on new name the Port Hope Aquatic Club bas just recently changed their club name to the 'Sea Devils". The name change was made because their club members corne from many different areas in the Northumberland Board., The club is hoping that it will make it easier to fundraise and it wil get rid of the idea that they're just a Port Hope Club. Office equipment theft The Port Hope Police reported that thieves made off with more than $11,600 wortb of office equipment from the Chemcraft Sadoline Plant. TMe thieves broke into the plant by smnashing tbrougb a door that lead'to the office. Awareness of compostirig is the need An active compost co-ordinator is trying harder ail the time to promote people to compost. Ms. Christine Adam-Passemore finds that she bas an easier time advising the younger generation to compost. Ms. Adam-Passemore thinks that they understand ber job more easily and the concept behind it ail. The younger generation can pass the message onto their parents who realiy neyer had to grow up ini this situation of being "earth friendly.' Awareness of the composting system is one thing that people need to knowv about, but it bas to be, accompanied by knowledge flot just assumptions, of how to compost. Board votes in favour of name change The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education bas decided to change its name to the Nortbumberland-ClariflgtolI Board of Education. Ibis decision was madein reflection of die name change of the Durham Region Municipality of Clarington earlier this year. It was estimated by the trustees who oppo sed the name change that it would cost between $28,000 and $38,000 to change things such as stationary, signs, logos, etc. SThe trustees were noticeably falling into two geographical sides. The trustees who were opposing the name change were mostly from the eastern jurisdiction, and the trustees from, the western area wanted the naine change. When complete, the shop will provide a secondary attraction to the sight and allow for expanded school and public programming. The special events committee is looking into an annual blacksmithing day at the Museum which would include live demonstration using outdoor, portable forges.
