MacGREGOR AUC11ONS Mks MacOregor 416-987-540 Junior West 416-983-556 6,ac Taking responsibility for Our own health care - a MUST1 by Pat Irwin Lycett On' Tuesday evening September 28, 1993, at Crystal pages the book store in Orono, Dr. J. Hawrylak addressed the naturopathic, homeopathic treatment for the modemn day plagues, of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Depression and Abdominal Disorders. It is a widely held view that these are just a few of the many diseases made worse (and often caused by) the breakdown of the body's immune system. It's first line of defense against attack by pathogens and other foreign material. There are many 'destroyers of the immune system'. We are bombarded daily with them and they come in many forms, sometimes even disguises. How many do you recognize as part of your life? Agene; Alcohol; Asparatane; Glutamic Acid; High-Fat Diet; Junk Food; Caffeine; Meats; and Heavy Metals such as Cadmium which is found in cigjarette smoke, and depresses the antibody response, or the body's ability to protect itself fromt attack. The healing mineral zinc is depleted by cadmium. Lead weakens the body's ability te protect itself, causing brain damage, neuritis and kidney cancer. Mercury, found in dental fillings is toxic. Apparently, dentists as a profession-al group have a higher incidence of suicide than other health care workers. This is now being attributed te working, on a daily basis with mercury. _ Vaccinations and antibiotics are considered one of the main causes of immune system disorders. There is a growing suspicion that immunization against relatively harmless childhood diseases may be responsible for the draxnatic increase in the autoimmune diseases since, mass, innoculations were introduced. For instance: the connection between. chicken pox innoculations and later life shingles, a herpes condition; and, the relationship between recurrent use of antibiotics and the plague of yeast infections. This latter being documented in the book "The Yeast Connection" written by Wm. G.,Crook,M.D. in 1983. Since one of the major functions of a healthy immune systemn is the removal of cellular debris, one can understand the possible connection between long terni constipation and the ising incidence of bowel cancer. Another fascinating high point in the evening's lecture concernied the drinking of milk by anyone old enough ta be weaned. Ail cow's niilk sold in Canada, with the exception of the province of Quebec, contains antibiotics and dead bacteria resulting from the use of thse antibiotic. The frequent question voiced when this topic is raised concerns the body's need for calcium and how te get it, when deprived of milk. Answer: Thse cows get calcium from the grass and greens they eat in the fields, ad we would do well te do thse samne. Greens, that is! not grass. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, with its wealth of literature, continues te defy the experts. No one really knows, definitively, its causes or 'how te cure'. There are many other illnesses sometimes mistaken for it. I t has been blamed on the fast-pace of modem life, as hard-driving, obsessive young adults seem te be prime candidates. Many authorîties have 7suggested that thse symptoms are simply a product of depression. But recent reports lead teaa poient new virus that may be the cause. AIDS, which stands f or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, is also virus-caused. In both cases, the immune system appears te be deficient, unable te do its job, unable te. form a defence against attack by pathogens and other foreiga material. .0' Ume QF kr-4 Mel-r'.
