4- Oono eekIy Times, Wedneday, Otbr2,19 "A"Champ ionship Finalists at Slo-Pitch Tournie J&M Custom Tykes begin with a win Last Thursday, while the Philadelphia Phillies subdued the Toronto Blue Jays, J &,M Custom Tykes broughi hometown pride to Orono in a win in their opening game at the Bowmanville Recreation Complex --- 5 to 2 against A & R Flooring. While the win was a. team effort by ail members of J & M Custom, Carl Tordiff, # 10, did an excellent job minding the net. First goal was scored by Doug Garlick, # 5, assisted. 1y Eric Kuening, # 17. Mark Kelly, ý 8, scored the second goal assisted by Derek Sellers, # 3. Doug Garlick went on to score a second time, assisted by Brent Vanstone, 4* 7, and the fourth and fifth goals were both scored by Justin Caruana, # 4 --- the four assisted by Evan Moore, # 9, the- fifth --- Caruana --- unassisted. On Thursday, October.2lst the Newcastle Girls -Slo-Pitch Association held their annual Awards Night, in which 30 teams (approx. 400 girls) along with coaches and sponsors were acknowledged for their participation in this year's bal season. Jim Hancock, President, individually thanked' team sponsors by awarding them with team sweaters, pictures an7d trophies. Each team member and coach were then awarded with trophies for league and toumarnent standings, and M.V.P.s for each toumnament gaine played. Pictured above are the team members from Stutt's Pharmacy Midget team who finished their season in fourth position in league standings and took the "A" finalists championship in the tournament held on September 1 lth and l2th. It was a busy Saturday,,with three games being played, starting at 8 a.m. September 11lth. 'Me first game was played against Mike's, with the winning score 10-9. The M.V.P. chosen for our team by Mike's was our short stop Allison Stafford. Game 2 was then played at 1:30 against Newcastle Lions, final score 21-1. M.V.P. for Stutt's was our left fielder Karrie Armstrong. Game 3 was played at 4:30 against Dy-Tech, with a final score of 17-3. Chosen M.V.P. was our pitcher Mary McKenzie. 1With three straight wins on Saturday the girls then qualified to play on Sunday for the "A" Championship, against Rushwood. As the scores showed from Saturday the girls must of out-hit themselves as, they just couldn't seen to match the bats of Rushwood, with the final score of the game 15-7 in Rushwood's favour. Rushwood's team chose Michelle Faulkner, our centre fielder as M.V.P. for the final garne. The girls played an outstanding season and toumnament, and have for the past 2 years, had great accomplishments in developing team spirit, comradeship and have greatly improved their skîlls as bail players. For a young team Roughley Novice start new season On the heels of the Blue Jay's Second Straight World Series victory, another Novice House League season begins. You may not recognize the team this year as they sport the Roughley Insurance red and white colours. The team is coached thîs year by Gary Geraldi and ma nager Dave Hall. The 93-94 lime up looks like this: Jordan Beacock, Shawn Dejohn, Jeffery Dickinson, Tyler Gregg, John Halik, Michael Knapp. Jeff Mercier, John Patrick Pisani, Jesse Price, Aaron RZobinson, Jeff Slemon, Dustin Weagant and Kienan Williams. The boys opened their season on Tuesday, October 19 in Bowmanville playing James Insurance.ý James opened the scoring in the first period but Rough ley's John Patrick Pisani countered shortly after with bis first goal of the season. James was able to score again in the second period and try-as they might our boys were unable to get one past their goalie. The final score was 2-1 but the coach was satîsfied with their first game of the season. On Sunday, October 24, the team travelled to Newcastle where they played an 8 a.m. Exhibition game. In goal for Roughley's was Jeff Slemon. Roughley's opened the game at 3:31 of the first period with a goal by Jesse Price, assisted by Shawn Dejohn. At 2:29 Shawn Dejohn was given a penalty for tripping. While shorthanded, Jordan Beacock had a breakaway to which the Newcastle goalie came up big* This was followed by a rush by Newcastle and an equally big save was made by Jeff Slemon. The scoring continued in the second period with Jeff Mercier getting his first from Jordan Beacock at 1:45. Newcastle made it 2- 1 at 8:30 of the third period but Jesse Price with.his second of the game put them ahead 3-1 at 4:53. John Patrick Pisani just missed an open net with a great shot which sent the rush te other way. Newcastle scored at 3:07 making the game close. They kept the pressure on in the last who have had 50 many changes in the last 2 years, with teamn members and have still managed to make it both years to the "A" Chiampionship in the toumaments, no words can express how proud both parents and coaches are of these girls achievements. Squccessful Dinner Orono United Church again sponsored a very successful roast beef dinner on Saturday, October 23rd. There were a few short at the early sitting, but an overflow for second sitting. A large crowd of hungry folks, from near and far sat down to laden tables and an extra table needed. Everyone glad to have visitors, and especially Sid and Toots Barrabali and Gladys and Everett Brown, ahl the way from Peterborough. .Our grateful thanks to everyone who worked, who attended and supplied s0 many delicious rnouth-watering pies (about 110-115 ail together). Orono Board of Stewards Major Plumbing Novice with undefeated streak Orono Major Plumbing Novice hosted Manvers Friday evening in their first league home game of the season. Orono came out strong but ran into a hot goaltender who held the home side off the score sheet throughout the first period despite many good scoring chances. It was not until midway through the second period that Orono finally broke through with a goal by Jamie Rowe assisted by Matt Caruana. Kevin Martin with his first goal of the season scored with one minute left in the period after being set up in front of the goal by Matt Caruana and Lee Allin. Jesse Gimblett broke in from the opening faceof of the third period to score an unassisted goal to give Orono a commanding lead. Glencoe Hogle playing bis first gaine of the season in goal lost his shutout bid late in the period when Manvers scored from a scramble in front of the net to bring the final score to Orono 3, Manvers 1. Orono puis their undefeated streak on the line Tuesday evening in Sunderland and plays Omemee at home Friday at 7:30 p.m.' This teai is playing some fine hockey and is a good representative for Orono. ToroBatm stand with 5 wins, O losses, i tile The Bowmanville Toro Major Bantains, sponsored by Halminen Homes, were undefeated aftér 5 games going into last Tuesday nights gaine against Whitby, at the Darlington arena. The teain was trying to keep their streak alive and in the first period they constantly pressured the Whitby defence but could not beat the Whitby goalkeeper. At the end of one period of play there was no score. Whitby seemed to corne alive in the second period, and Jeff Parry in goal for the Toros, was kept busy. He kept bis team in the gaine with at least two great saves early in the period, however, Whitby got a breakaway and scored the first goal midway through the period on a play that left Parry injured in the goal crease. Parry had to go to the bench to catch bis breath and Cameron Millar took bis spot for a shift. This seemed to shake up the Toros and within 20 seconds they had tied the game, when Darryl Cook scored on an assist by Tony Butzer. There was no more scoring in the period but the Toros had taken back the advantage from Whitby.
