Clarke Sr. Boys Volleyball team take Gold, OFSAA by: Tan-ya McLean On Friday, November 26,1993 and Saturday, November 27, 1993 I witnessed some amazing and exhilarating Senior Boys Single 'A' Voileyball teams. t was OEF.S.A.A. and 18 teams from al areas of Ontario came to compete. Ah -of the team.s had a lot of pressure on them to win but one team 1 think had a littie more than everyone else. Clarke's team was seated in Ist and expected to win. Piaying in home territory probabiy added some more pressure. "Itfs more pressure but it couid bc good. t couid work both ways." Aaron Stapies told me: before his second match on Friday. Watching Ciarke's team warmn- up I noticed that there wasn't any outstanding tali boys. Obviously bigger doesn't mean better. <ýIarke is filled though with many ý-aented players. I asked Aaron S tapies and-i Clarke's coach if they felt that their team ever feels intimidated by other teams. "The better the team the better we play." Aaron Staples said, the starting middle. Lyn Lowery replied "No, we intimidate others." I'd say that they're packed with confidence. Clarke had a lot of support playing in their own gym and the ones at Bowmanville High Schooi. I had neyer seen such young taiented teams with a lot of sportsmanship. t was a thrili!! Many spectators stayed until the last match was completed at B.H.S. I got a chance to speak to a rookie on Clarke's tearn and 1 got a few comments. "It's quite a thrill to le here, it's great overail and its weii organized." said Chad Petherick. I asked Chad Petheick if he feit that they were at their limit and he toid me, "Not right now." It was easy 10 see that the team wanted more and are capable of doing so. I believe that any tearn of any sport can achieve whatever they go for if they try and practice as hard as they can. Aaron Stapies informed me that the team practices 3 or 4 days a week, for 1 toi 11/2 hours. "Coaching bas be-en good al through High Schooi." Aaron Stapies said. Without a coach as bard working, depenctable and dedicated as the players it wouid be very difficuit to achieve such success. Coach Lowery is that to the team. A lot of the teamn's success is contributed 10 the good coaching. Anyone can play the game, it's ail a matter of giving yourseif that extra push to jump higher, pass the bail more preciseiy, spike the bail with more authority and control and to discipline yourseif. I hope that people were inspired by this local team because 1 know I was. 1 give Clarke's team a lot of credit for winning 121 games out of 150 during their season. 1 aiso want to congratulate themn for winning the gold medal at O.F.S.A.A. I could only imagine that ie wasn't as easy to accomplish.
