In a discussion on a provincial iorccast of population growth in the Greater Toronto Arca Counc. "Age of Conoern" News and Information for Seniors" from Your "Senior" ai Queen's Park - Gord Milis Last week, in the Ontario Legisiature, I spoke in support of legisiation that will allow municipalities to permit "Gartien Suites" or better known as "Granny Fiats" to be erecteti close to existing homes. Research hýas shown that many seniors do not want to leave their homes and treasured possessions for a roomn in a nursing home. At the samec time, most seniors do not want to become any burden on their familles for care anti meals. A gooti- idea that was suggested, is to allow your son or tiaughter, to erect a small portable building on the lot of their home connect it to the hydro and water/sewer systems, thereby allowing the senior relative to live independently, yet close enough to family in case help is needeti. In recent months, I have'lbeen working on this idea aiong with a local businessman. What bas now been developed is a sectional flat, completely portable, vermin and pest proof, highly insulate d, and very attractive. The portability ailows the flat to bectismantled Kendal Hall News -On Thursday, December 9th, the Ladies of Kendal Hilîs L.O.B.A. 1420 held their Christmas Supper for the Members and for visiting guests. We were honoured to have as our guest R.W. Sis. Doris Dixon, Gr. Mistress of the Grand Prov. Lodge of Ont. East, and hier husband, as well we had several Sisters from Tyrone, Warkworth and Peterborough. The ladies did the cooking and the Men of Kendal L.O.L. 405 did the serving andi the cleaning up, this was a real treat. The meal was held in the Sunday School room of Kendal United Church andi then we ail went over to the Hall for Lodge. Followîng the regular meeting we were treateti to a cake in the shape of Santa and everyone went home wiih a gift, even the men, who joineti us for a time of fellowshîp. On Saturday, December I 11h, threeof the young women of Kendal, Trish Scholz, Patti Lucas and Laurie Sellars hosted a Chr istmas party for the chiltiren' of Kendal. The Ladies Lotige were pleaseti to donate the use of the hall. Between fifty and sixty chiltiren attended, they made crafts, coloureil, sang carols. Enid Brewer played the piano for these. They hati sandwiches, Scott said hie had grave concerus rcgarding a proposeti 3 to 1 ration of rcsidentiai growth to, that of labour growth in the Municipality' of Clarington. He said he diint finti such ratios in Oshawa or Whitby andt hat no centre in the Region-had such a wide ration. once it is no longer needed, and passed along-to someone else. The idea in the works is to make-these flats availabie for lease at a cost far beiow the cost of nursing home accommodation. I will be sitting on the General GovernIment Committee during February, as the all-party committee listens to public input on this proposal. Local municipalities are to be given the authority to permit these "Granny Flats" along with some model contract guidelines to follow. At the moment the legisiation will only permit close relatives to erect a fiat for use by a senior. I woulti like to see this amended to allow close friends to provide space on their lots. This- would accommodate those who have no family, yet do have very close frientis. 1 Ail that is left for me now is to convince my familyto allow a "Granny Fiat" on their property when my wife and I reach that point in our lives. Tbis column will resume in 1994. Until then - have a wonderful Festive Season and may '94 bc a healthy year for ail of you. cookies and orange juice.
