Durham Environmental Network Conveys Scientists' Warni*nOronao Durham Environmental Network (DEN) has been working to convey an important message to local politicians and educators which will hopefully hielp return the environmental agenda to, the minds of at least some of Durhiam Regions citizens and politicians. A pamphlet entitled "World Scientists' Warning to Humanity", from the Union of Concernied Scientists, has been distributed to ea ch o f thie eighit municipal Councils in the Region. Eachi individual Councillor has received bis or her own copy. The pamphle0t bas also been sent to each of the seh ools in Durham, to the attention of Environmental Liaison and Science Head teachers. Provincial and federal politicians throughout Durham will also bc receiving copies of the pamphlet in the near future. The Union of Concerned Scientists was formed in the U.S. in 1969 to advance responsible publi c policies in areas where technology plays a criticalrole. Their warning was sent out a year agor now to the government leaders of ahl nations, and at the time it was sent, it had been signed by 1670 scientists, including 104 Noble laureates. Somne highlights from the pamphlet: "Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course . . . If not checked, many Tales ToId Twice (Conitinued fromi page 6) January 1972 Mr. Kay Lycett Orono was one among nincty-nine who, were honoured last Friday by Lieutenant Governor in Council by appointment as Queens' Counsel. Tfhe Queens' Counsel title allows the Iawycrs to use the letters, Q.C. alter their names and wear silk court gowns in place of the regular cotton. Don't forget that the rate for a first class letter (weighiing up to 1 ounce) bas gone up to 8 cents as of of our current practices put at serious risk the futureý that we wish for humnan socîety and the plant and animal kingdoms Fundamnental changes are urgent if we are to avoid the collision our present course will bring about ... No- more than one or a few decades remnain before the chance to avert tbe threats we now confront will be lost and the prospects for humanity immeasurably diminished." Fujrther reading of the U.C.S. warning pamphlet notes that all sectors of society must become învolved," convincing reluctant leaders and reluctant govemnments and reluctant peoples themselves to effect the needed changes." Environmental issues seemn lately to have taken a back seat to economic concerna in the minds of many citizens. ýMembers of Durham Enviromnrtal Network hope the circulation of the "World Scientists" Warning to Humanity"- pamphlet will help people come to the realization that the attitude that we can afford to view the environment and the economy as irreconcilable issues is one we can no longer afford. .Any individuals who would like wo have a look at the Warning pamphlet are welcome to cal (905) 985-3225 and request that a copy be mailed out to them.
