Guess who was, there! Santa arrived at the Orono Town Hall on Saturday afternoon and greeted well over one hundred children on the occasion. Violencei sehools not to be tolerated Educators representing four jurisdictions and police met last week discussing violence in scbools. The meeting was held in Oshawa with reps froin the Durham Boards of Education, public and separate, the Northumberland and Clarington public board and the Peterborough, Victoria, Northum- berland and Newcastle Separate Board. The group forms the Safe Schools Committee and involves Durhamn Regional Police, Peterborough, Port Hope and Cobourg police. The members of the committee signed a protocol outlining procedures to be followed dealing with violence in area sehools. It was said there there are two different cultures - the school culture and the police culture. It was stated that the two had to be brought together. It was agreed at the meeting that over the past couple of years crime at schools 'have flot increased and that there was flot a huge number of crimes. It was said bowever those committed are more than lîkely to be more seious or violent. Under the policy a criminal investigation can be started by the principal, victim, a victims parent or guardian. Principals are to co-operate witb police. The document signed puis into rights those guaranteed under the Young Offenders Act and the Freedoin of Information Act. The school boards and the police plan to expand "Adopt a school-adopt an officer program". The police officer is given a tour of bis school, a mailbox and introduced to the staff.
