8 - Orono Wekly limes, Wednesday, Jaruary 12, 1994 J meflct by Helen MacDonald Are you stili chasing imaginary windmills on a fitness treadmil. . trying to burn off the excesses of the holiday season? Is the mindless jump-bounce-stretch- twist routine reaching heights of boredom as you strive ever harder for that perfect Jane Fonda figure? "How does she do it?", you ask yourself, not sure if the question - means: "How does she stay s0 young, thin and beautiful?", or: "How does she do it, and smile?" Well, the cat's out of the bag, 50 to speak. Her smile' speaks aow, and the words pouring forth are telling women "don't go for the bura". For reasons 1 can only guess, Jane Fonda, the movie queen of fitness, has taken an about tara admitting that excessive emphasis on exercise and a twenty-year battle with the eating disorder, bulimia, has resulted in an unhealthy pers onal obsession about appearance. So. Jane Fonda has found not some exotic Hollywood-style religion, but common sense. But only after making millions of dollars convincing millions of women that exercise, and more exeitise are the 'way to go' ... -not to 'the grave, but to that place of happiness only the thin and beautiful know of. Let's get this straight. Fonda, a public figure most -would admît secms fairly straight forward and candid, is a woman who North Amer ican women view as the embodiment of health, fitness and beauty. She get's this way by * exercising until beyond hurt, and by suffering from a serious eating disorder for over twenty years. And, we want to be like her!?? Yes. And, she saw a lucrative* market. Fitness. And, fîtness equals beauty and glamour ... right? If women want to bc like Jane Fonda, then shie will show them how. Ergo ... the multi- gazillion dollar fitness-video, trick. For less than $50-00 you can bounce and jump and stretch and twist (and groan, and hurt) like Fonda as oftcn as you like in your own livingroom. Sorry, though, no tips on the, ahum, diet Keepi ng In Touch (Continued from page 7) We think this is a waste of time, energy and money --- and that jobs are lost because shovels cannot be put into the ground quickly enough. Our Government is committed to reducing this to a reasonable period -- hopefully as little as six months -- so that everyone can plan better. We beieve that jobs depend on thîs. Second, we are reforming the aspect. And, you try, and you try, and still Jane Fonda's reflection doesn't magically greet you at the mirror one day. It's, -ho hum, only you. 1Well, what can you expect? You have this simple life with job, family, grocery shopping, housecleaning, chcque-balancing *1 . no, time (or money> to exercise at 'the club' four hours each day, or for weekly visits to the health spa, the masseur, or those special facials that crase wrinkles and baby drool. But neyer mmnd the unreality of the Fonda--esque qucst! It's a scara! Jane Fonda only looks s0 good because she has the money to pamper herself, and she has made the unfortunate leap into the twilight zone of the beauty myth by not doing for her body what is most natural-- feeding it adequately. And the 'Barbie doîl' Fonda that smiles from millions of television screens is not' presenting the whole story. Or, do we- want to believe that the regular coaxing and persona] attention afforded by connecting our bodies to a Jane Fonda fitness video we, too, can be thin, glamorous, exciting, sexy and beautiful? On the outside. Somewhere along the way, though, we've lost touch with the idea of inner beauty which is far more interesting and richer. Either way, Fonda loses credibility for capitalizing on our weakness in believing in the beauty myth. Furthermore, what kind of accountability is attached to an individual who rakes in millions selling a concept, but who has not been entirely forthcoming on the connection between personal fitness and good health. And we lose -- not pounds or inches, but faith in someone who seemed, even by Hollywood's standards, believable. 1 think l'Il go for a walk. Postscript: Happy Birth Momn! SWe feel, strongly that green planning -- planning that respects the enviroament -- does not have to be inefficient or slow planning. Our goverament has unveiled new land use policy statements on such issues as ravines and farmland to clearly state what areas can be developed and what areas should remain untouched. After a short, three-month consultation on these statements, we intend to enshrine these statements into law. Third, and finally, we feel H-alos, Dogs and Omnens by Bill Bunting For those who look at the sky on a regular basis, trying to forecast tomorrow's weather, they often see what appears to be a circle of light around the sun. At other turnes one or two bright spots may be seen off to one or both sides of the sun. In the first instance they arc seeing -solar halos". In the second "sun dogs", given this naine since they appear to "dog" or "mock"' the suri. In our part of the country, solar halos are seen about 30 times per year and sun dogs about 10 times per year. Both of these phenomena may also be observed around the moon and are called "lunar halos" and "moon dogs". In thie case of the moon they are usually only noticed when the moon is full and hence are not observed as often as the sun variety. Both halos and sunt dogs usually appear white although they may sometimes contain the colours of the rainbow, with red nearest the sun followed by yellow, green and bluish white on the outside. Early civilizations saw, these phenomena as evil omens sent by some malevolent spirit as warnings of troubled times to corne. However, as in ail natural phenomena there is a rational, scientiflo explanation rather than a superstitious one. You wil always see halos and sun dogs when the sun is shining through a thin layer strongly that control of local development should rest with people through their municipal leaders. TÈhat's why we are re- designing, the division of powers between the Provinceand the municipality. While the Province, will retain final approval over major planning decisions m- such as official plans -- individual developîn.ent applications will be approved by the municipalities. For example, the Province intends to move final approval of minor variances out of the hands of the Ontario Municipal Board to where they belong -- with local municipal councils. These kinds of matters usually, involve development issues such, as building ad ditions or extensions. It is ludicrous, in our view, that 0MB time has been wasted on such local matters. We believe our reformed land use systemn will put control of local development in the hands of local citizens - not planners at Queen's Park. In împl ementing the recommendations of the Commission, we are recognizing the many different land use issues that affect different areas-of the province. We are building a system, which. reflects Ontario's diversity, that will work equally <well for each type and size of municipality. Provincial policies will be strengthened, while at the saine time, flexibility for local needs will be allowed. Temperatures at the highest altitudes may be as low as, -60 degrees Celsius (-75 degrees F.) Like the six-sided snow flakes we are familiar with, ice crystals are also six-sided. They have several configurations. They may be: 1. A six-sided thin plate. 2. A six-sided columa. 3. A six-sided column with a six- sided plate attached at one end. 4. A six-sided column sharpened at one end like a pencil. When sunlight passes through these crystals, entering one face and exiting through another, the light path is bent 22 degrees and is said to be "refracted". This refraction forms mirror solar images, which we -sec as halos or dogs, about 22 degrees fromn the sun. 1Which manifestation you see depcnds on the alignment of the ice crystals in the cloud. To sec a halo, the crystals must be uniformi in size and -be arranged haphazardly, thus refracting sunlight in ahl directions, producing the circular diffusion. Sun dogs are scec when the ice crystals are in their six sided platelet formn with ail their six sides arranged vcrtically. This results in sunlight being refracted in two directions, producing the sun dog effect 22 degrees on cither side of the sun. While ancient people thought these phenomena forecast disaster, in modern times they do give a reasonable forecast of weather to corne. One of our folk rhymes "Ring around the moon, ramn is coming soon" indicates this. The cirro-stratus clouds which causes the halos and sun dogs to form are quite often the first visible signs of an approachîng warm front, bringing wet or snowy weather. Canadian studies show that two times out of three, ramn or snow will arrive within 18 to 36 hours alter halos or sun dogs have been observed. Consider B owmanville.
