No 1994 tax increase A no-tax increase for 1994 is likely to be heard quite universally this year in Ontario due to taxpayers stating thiey have had enough in, taxation and also for the fact that it is an election. The Clarington Hydro Commission that operates a service for Orono, Newcastle and Bowmanville have declared a no- increase in rates for 1994. Now Gary Herrema, chairman of the Region and Nancy Diamond, Mayor of Oshawa, have made pled ges that there wil be no tax increase both in the Regional system and in the City of Oshawa. Taxpayers in this area will look for similar pledges from the municipality and from the board of education. 1, don't know about those Americans! It's bad enough that we have to, lis ten to them speak with those accents, but do we have to live with the fact'that they can flot speil. Day after day we are bombarded by the poor spelling of our neighbours to the south. It's as if the letter 'U', does flot exist in the American alphabet. It is as common in their language as the "X" is anywhere in the world. Yeah, you know what I mean! Color, instead of Colour. Neighbor, instead of Neighbour. But here, is a new one. Running the Speli Checkon the computer, the word "Carousel" came up as suspect, meaning it was spelt wrong. Huh? 1 don't sec anything wrong. Well, checking the word through the Speil Check dictionary, it tells me that it is speit... C-A-R-R-O-U-S- E-L. Hmmmmm .. They put the "U" in. But where does that mystery "R" corne ftom? They say that English is the hardest language to. learn. No wonder. With discrepancies like this in spelling, and we are mere kilometers (miles, if you are American) apart. Cross the border, check your ",U" at Customs, The spelling is one thing, but the accents that abound, especially in the States, would make a learners head spin. Take New Yawk, for example. What's with the "wu" sound. Roll your R's. Be proud of them. Maybe they ail want to be Babawa Waltews. As for the Deep South, I can't even stand the sound of those folks. Too many mint juleps perhaps? The perfect vacation! No longer just an elusive dream, it is a sound investment in the style and quality of your life. A time to relax and recharge your batteries.-An interval to learn and grow; a time to spJend with yourself and your Ioved ones. When you first start to think about a holiday, you think about what things you like to do, or where you have had a good time befo re. You talk about your thoughts with the family, share your dreams with the folks at work, and think about your ideas as you drive Now, this is flot about American bashing here. Hey, the English are just as bad. But, they can speli. The upper class English they sound ail right. Those cockney accents... whoa!! Slow it down. Repeat it. I'm partial to the flat, middle of nowhere accent that we Canadians have adopted as our own. Though maybe flot music to the ears, at least you can understand us, eh. PotAEto. PotAAta. TomAEto. TomAAta. Hey, let's cail the whole thing off.
