Roughley Novice liard strugledoesn't pay off Roughley Novice were on home ice on January 26 ta play National Trust. The first period was wide open hockey with rushes froin end ta, end for both sides. In the second period Orono struck first on a pretty goal by #16 Jeff Mercier. National Trust caine back in the second and tied the score and went ahead 2-1 early in the third. With only 16 seconds remaining in the gane #12 J.P. Pisani tied the score as the gaine ended 2-2. February lst had the team travelling ta the -Bowmanville Recreation Complex ta take on Liberty Mutual. Orono was hot in the first period and entered the second with a two goal lead. The scorers were #12 J.P. Pisani and #3 Michael Knapp. At 14:00 #3 Michael Knapp put in his second of the gaine and with a 3- lead a win was looking gaod. The teain let down a little and Liberty Mutual caught on fire and scored 5 unanswered goals. The final score was 5-3. On Saturday, February 5, the tearn travelled ta Ops ta participate in a Novice hause league tournament. It was a special and a lilule bit sad day for the boys as one of their colleagues #6 Kienan Williams would be moving away the next day. The boys were up to the challenge.of tournament play as they taok on their fjrst opponents Port Perry. The first period saw thein count 2-0 on goals by #8 Michael Knapp assisted by #15 T. Gregg and #23 Dejong,,and #16 J. Mercier unassisted. The lead continued ta grow in the 2nd by 2 on goals by #12 J.P. Pisani, assisted by #7 B. Chartrand. The third saw the teamn get their final twa goals by #16 J. Mercier assisted by #5 A. Robinson and #14 Jordon Beacock assisted by #15 T. Gregg. Gaine one ended 6- 0 with a shut-out by goalie Jeff, Slemon who was outstanding. This sent the boys on ta the 'A' Champ side and had thein facing Ail Saints froin Peterborough. This was a liard played, physical gaine. Orono played well but could flot overcome a 4-3 deficît. Scoring for Orono #12 J.P. Pisani assisted by #15 T. Gregg and #14 Jordon' Beacock assisted by #9 J. Optimist ITykes win Belleville battie The Bowmanville Optimist Club Tyke Selects met the Belleville Selects for the third lime this season an Saturday, January 29. On this occasion, thc Bowmanville Selects clearly established theinselves as the superior teain with convincing 7- 2 victory. After faling behind on an early Belleville goal, Bowmanville tied the gaine wlien Chris Boyce flipped the puck over the Belleville goaltender ta finish off a nice rush by Matt Mitchell. Matt Best also assisted an the play, and the first period endecl in a 1 -1 tic. Early in the second periad, Belleville drew a penalty and managed ta score while- shorthanded. Bowmanville then took a penalty to create a 4-an-4 situation, and Rene, Cartier took advantage of the open ice ta score an a breakaway, knotting the gaine at 2 goals apiece. The pace of the gaine at this point was fairly fast, in spite of a flurry of, penalties ta bath sides. Gord Baird was steady on goal, stopping 5 of the 7 shots lie faced. Adamn CuIl started the onslaught, Major Plumbing Novice advance in playoffs, The Major Plumbing OMHA Novi-ce hockey team had another busy week starting with their final tulle-up game before die playoffs in Port Hope on Tuesday night. Orono scored midway through the first period when, Nathan Adegeest.slapped home a rebound off a shot by Matt Caruana. Although Orano held the advantage in the play and scoring chances they were flot able ta score again. Port Hope tied the gaine on a breakaway in the third period to end the game in a 1 to 1 tie. Friday night the playoffs started at home against Millbrook with Orano starting very slowly allowmng Millbrook ta jump into a quick two goal lead. Orono finally got maving and tied the score on goals by DJ. Boardinan assisted by Jamie Rowe and by Jesse Gimblett from Jamie Rowe and D.J. Boardman. The wheels fell off the Orono gamne once more with Millbrook again taking a two goal lecad on two quick goals midway through the second peniod. Orono gat one goal back in the last minute of the second with Nathan Adegeest, scaring from the crease assisted by Matt Caruana and Curtis Robinson. Jamie Rowe tied the score in the middle of the third period when Lee Allin found huai alone *i the slot. The Gimblett brothers then took over with Jesse scoring three unanswered goals, the first two unassisted and the final one inta the empty net assisted -by brother Tyson. Orono took the advantage in the series with the come froin behmnd 7 to 4 victary. Saturday we took part in the Newcastle tournament opening with a gaine against the Bowmanviile Toros. Orono drew first blood on a fine three way passing play with Cuit Robinson scoring assisted by Jesse Gimblett and Ma tt Caruana. The Toros came back in the second period and took the lead but Orono tied it in the dying seconds of the period when Jesse Gimblett scored assisted by Jamie Rowe and Collin Cureatz. Bowmanviile scored late in the third period to eke ou t a tight 3 ta 2 victory and put Orono into the hunt for the 'C' championshîp. assisted by Adamn Cryderman and Matt Mitchell. Hard work by Chris Boyce led ta Michael Richardson's second goal, with Bryan Barchard also drawing an assist. This was followed by an unassisted goal by Matt Best. Richardson then completed his hat-trick, assisted again by Barchard along with Rene Cartier. The final shots on goal were 12-10 in Bowmanville's favour, but the gaine really tumned on the ability of aur boys ta play as a team. The weekend of February 5-6 was unusual in that the B.R.H.L. Op timist Tyke Selects did not play a gaine, due to a tournarnent booked into the Newcastle Menaa. The tearu will return to action on Saturday, February 12 against an oppanent from Ajax. See you th ere! The second gaine saw us up against the Little NHL Major Bruins. Orono took a 2 ta 1Iclad in the first period on goals by Malt Caruana assisted by D.J. Boardman and D.J. Boardinan froin Jamie Rowe and Jesse Gimblett. D.J. rounded out the natural hat trick with two goals assisted by Matt Caruana and Tyson Gimblett and by Jesse Gimblett. Orono continued ta take control of the gamne with goals by Nathan Adegeest from Bryan Bickell, Jesse Gimblet unassisted, Nathan Adegeest froin Bryan Bickeil and Matt Caruana. and by Jesse Gimnblett assisted by D.J. Boardinan. 'Mis solid 8 ta 3 victory placed Orono into the 'C' championship gaine against the Little NHL Major Black Hawks. Orono scored first on an unassisted goal by DJ. Boardin but Oshawa managed ta tie the gaine in the dying seconds of thie first period. That was as close as they would came as Jesse Gimblett scored twice in the second with assists to Jamie Rowe and to Nathan Adegeest. Jesse scored twice more in the third period assisted by Ctirt Robinson and Chris Kirkbride on the first and unassisted on the second to power Orono to a 5 ta 2 victory and the 'C' championship traphy. Orono was back-stopped aIl day by top notch goaltending by Josh Brandt, who came up big on a nuinber of occasions. Sunday nîght Orono resumed their playoff round in Millbrook. It was evident early that, the boys did flot want ta play a third gaine in the series as they came out strong and took the lead late in the first period when Bryan Bickell converted a fine passing play froin Matt Caruana and Nathan Adegeest. D.J. Boardinan added ta the lead froin a goal mouth scramble assisted by Jesse Gimblett and Glencoe Hogle. Orono kept the momentuin goîng with another fine passing play resulting in Lee Allun scoring assisted by Jesse Gimblett and Curtis Robinson.
