Gilbert. In other words, we are all family. The United Nations has declared 1994 the International Year of the Family. Many interpret tbis to include a 'return to traditional famnily values', often equated with the 'Father knows best' principals. However, a recent report by researcher Shere Hfite, rejects the idea of 'traditional' family. After more than a decade of research, Hite concludes that the traditional family is outdated, authoritarian and at the root of many of society's injustices. Furthermore, the family, dlaims lite, is net worth saving. Last faîl, I spent many evenings pouring over nearly 40 years of family photographs in preparation for a large family gathering. Aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and family friends were revealed in a multitude of celebrations. As the 1950's became the '60's, the sizeof our family grew with new members joining as partners. During the 1970's and '8's, the f-mily grew again --- more babies, --à~. more partners. With sadness, I noted those family members wbo have left us. But, their, photographs remain reminders of somne of the joys we shared. Withmn our grand family, tbere are sînaller family units, somne of which do not forma te 'traditional' family --- mother, father, children. But, it doesn't matter. We'are all family. .Webster's Dictionary defines 'family' as: a household; kindred;, descendents of a common ancestor, a tribe; lineage. During one of bis lectures last year, a professor told us that he came fromn the large historical family of philosophers, going as far back into time as bumankind bas sougbî for 'trutb and justice. This romantic conceptualization of tbe grand family of philosophers is not much différent than tbat whicb many associate with tbe 'traditional family'. But, today's family is mobile, smaller, and more dependent upon a paycbeque than upon a good growing season, or upon eacb other. The young enter tbis world embraced by tecbnology, rather than by family. The ritual of entering womanhood or manbood is equated witb 'age of majority', and the ownersbip of a drivers' license. How fast our young leave home, family and community! And, the elderly do not die amidst family, but in 'homes for the aged'. In my lifetime, 'traditional fainiy' only existed on television. The marriage of two cultures in a 'new land' gave my brothers and sisters and I our own family traditions and celebrations very personal meaning. Beyond, yet interconnected witb the 'home' family, was the family we calied 'neighbourhood', and the family we called 'churcb'. And, as we found partners, we also became members of other faiiies. Family, for me, bas many meanings. Family is wbere love, support, laugbter, even pain, and bours disassembling the parts. The two state there are many applications for their equipment and service and are looking at Durham Region and their water and sewer operation as a possible customer. The two say that hours upon hours can bc saved with the equipment and a printout can be provided. Reg ion sets plans for infrastructure works The public works committee of Durham Region is to offer plans for some eleven project whicb would qualify for funding under the federal/provincial infrastructure program. The, committze would have council set aside $40 million for their plans. The projects would have to start within the year and be 85 percent completed by March 1996. The projects s0 far suggested have to be approved by the Regional finance committee, council and then final approval from the federal/provincial committee. Works include: $4.6 million 'for rebuilding Thornton Road between Rossland and Taunton Roads and the installation of watermains; $6.5 million to expand Regional Police Head- quarters in Oshawa; $8.1 million on sewage works at the Ajax pumping station; $8 million on Regional Roads; a similar amount for feedermain in North Whitby and Oshawa. The program of work is expected to give the local economy a kick-start for those that would be involved in such work programs. many other shared experiences bring people together. A retumn to traditional family? How is this possible? Did it ever really exist? I don't know. But, putting kindness, caring, support and 'community' into family, and family into community seem like good starting points. After aIl, we are ail family. 1 would like to indulge myself by expressing a special thank-you to all my families for all your support and kindnesses.
