The boys were sent home and told to go to bed early as they were to face McGregor's I.D.A. row on Saturday at 1:30. The boys were pumped for this game as they had yet to defeat this teain. This writer was not present for this gaine but by ail accounts the team piayed well and nearly shutdown the offence of McGregor's. Orono hosted Ops Novice to an exhibition -gamne the next evening. The boys had seen this teani play at the Ops tournament, but did not play them. Ops opened the scoring at 7:38 of the ILt Oronos # 14 Jordon Beacock scored first for Roughiey's, assisted by # 5 Aaron Robinson. Ops scored again but this was to be their last goal. Jeff Slemon la net made some great saves to hold Ops down. In the second period, Oronos # 16 Jeff Mercier scored on a pass from # 9 Jeff Dickcinson to tie the match. It was beginning to look like the garne wouid end in a tie when # 17 J.P. Pisani carried the puck lato the Ops end and scored with 41 seconds ieft to play. The boys needed that winning feeling wo help them on their way wo playoff playdowas. 'Major Plumbing Novice, versus Newcastle Novice The Orono Major Plumbing OMHA Novice took to the ice Thursday eveniag in Newcastle to begin the second round of the playoffs. Newcastle was heaviiy favoured to make short work of this series by virtue of their perfect 18 and 0 record throughout the regular season including tbree wins over Orono. As expected, Newcastle came out flylag but spectacular goaltending by Josh Braadt kept Orono la the gaine la the eariy going until the four minute mark of the first period when Tyson Gimbiett fed brother Jesse a Iead pass and he caught the Newcastle goalie by surprise witb a hard low shot to give Orono the iead. Late la the first period Orono faced a serions test when they were forced to play two men short for a minute and a haif. Successfuily killing these penalties proved to bu the turning point la the gaine as the boys realized that they could keep up to their strong opponents and began to play with a renewed vitality. They took control of-the garne la the second period when only a number of near misses kept the game close. Midway through the period, Curtis Robinson passed to Jesse Gimblett at the blue uine who took the puck lnanad scores froin a goalmontb scramble to give Orono an lasurance marker. Two minutes later Newcastle scored on a rebound to try to launch a comeback but it was not enough as the Orono defense held stroag to anchor a fine 2 to 1 victory. This lead held up until late in the second period when Newcastle scored on a bard shot to the glove side of Orono goalie Josh Brandt who was haviag another outstanding gamne in the net. A power play goal early in the third period gave Newcastle the lead for the first Urne and this prmved to be the one that broke the backs of the Orono teamn as they allowed tbrce more goals and a .5 to 1 win for Newcastle. The deciding game of the series was played in Newcastle Saturday afternoon. This game, like the first two turned into a defensive battie with Josh Brandt in the Orono goal once again piaying a key role as he made Save after Save on the high powered Newcaste offence. The game remained scoreiess until late in the second period when Newcastle fmnally beat the Orono goalie with a long shot., This goal gave them new life as they took coatrol of the game with four quick goals la the first haif of the third. Orono broke the shutout when Jamie Rowe scored on a rebound of a shot by D.J. Boardman and Jesse Gimblett. Newcastle scored once more in the dying seconds of the game to take a 6 to 1 victory in the gaine and eliminate Orono from the playoffs. Althougb they lost the series, the Orono boys shouid be proud of the way they handied themseives on and off the ice as they played some tremendous hockey and gave Newcastle a much tougher battle than they expectcd.
