The skating, passing, forechecking and backchccking wcrc simply outstanding, and the work ethic was apparent on cvcry shift. Opposing players wcre rareiy able te, carry the puck more Lban a stride or twe before being chcckcd or pressured by a Bowmanvilie player. Ail in ail, the Bowmnanville Tyke Sciects wcre a treat te, watcb, playing excellent, twe-way hockey te win the Wendcrland, Cup. Congratulations boys! A lot of credit must bc given te, the ceaching staff of Jim Barchard, Steve Richardson and Rob Cuil, wbo had the boys well-prepared and eager to play bard. The Bowmanville Optimist Tyke S elects epened the tournament against a team from 'Waterford. After a stirring rendition of "O Canada", followed by the ceremonial face- off between Captain Bryan Barchard and bis Waterford counterpart, the teams settled into a rather cautieus first period. Leading 1-0 entering the second period, Bowmanville exploded for seven second-period goals and four more ini tbe third enrouLe to a 12-O win. Captain Barchard was awardcd the "Player of the Game" medallion on the strength of bis 4-goal, 1-assist performance. Complete, scoring statistics are summarized later in this article. Advancing to the "A" Side of the tournament, the Bowmanvilce Optirnists faced off against the Stirling "Blues" Selects. This game was ail Bowmanville, as tbey scored on their first Lwo shifts and neyer looked back. Stirling rarely ventured beyond their own side of centre and did flot record their one shot on goal until Lwo minutes into the third period. The final score was 7-O, and player-of-the-game honours went Lo Adam Culi, who assisted on two of tbe first threc goals and was generally credited with taking the taiented Stirling goaltender out of the game with a wicked wrist shot to the mask from about eight feet eut. The young goalie was flot hurt on tbe play, but he seemed te lose some of bis cnthusiasm after that shot. Bryan Barchard continued to play bard, scorîng four times, and Michael Richardson, who was figbting a fever ail day, scored twice, addcd an assist and bad eight shots on goal. In tbe "A" cbampionship gamne, Bowmanvilie met the Barrie "Flyers" Tyke Seiects, wbo bad appeared impressive in their previeus games. Coacb Barchard was distressed te learn that Mike Ricbardson, wbose competitive "fire" had him literally burning with a bigh fever, would be unable te play. Undaunted, tbe Coacb did the obvious tbing and converted goalie Gord Baird into a forward. Gordie was more than wiiling, since he'd only teucbed the puck twice in the first two games. With everyone digging down a littie deeper, Bowmanviice jumped out Le a 3-O first-pcriod iead, wbicb they beld until the third period. Mfter Barrie scored eariy in the third, Bowmanville scored four more t"es te win tbe game 7-1 and tbe toumnament cbampionsbip. Rene Cartier, that Lewer of power on defense, teok player of the game bonours. Gord Baird hadl bis chances te score, and ultimately saw more rubber than bis goaltending partner Justin Andrews, who faced only four shots over tbe entire gamne. The winning goal in this game was scored by defenceman Corey Oliver, wbo was sure beaming after tbe game wben Coach Barchard announced tbat tbis was Cerey's first goal of the year "- good timing Corcy! In spite of some belligerent play by the dads, net te mention fisticuffs, the boys prcvaiied, and net a littie bit assisted by some sentimental officiating from Dianne Cornelissen - ini dxis case, "REF" was spelled "MOM'. The beys were back stopped by Dad Bob Bcst in tbe nets, piaying witb $1200 pads that didn't real cost him that and playing, like, real serlous. Anyway, a good time was had by all .. .I think (Adam Culi, in net for the Dads, is probably cured of the netmninding bug), and the team wil geL back to real hockey on Friday, March 4th in Pickering.
