In honoinr of lard aid Lady Baden Powell SScouts/Guides attend Orono Church Servlice The Municipality gave thrce readings ta a by-law in which the municipality enters into a contract with Oak Woodsmith Contracting of Hensail, Ontario, for the construction of the new fire department headquarters in Bowmanvile. Oak Wopdsmith Contracting was choosen fromt five firms which had pre-qualffied for the bidding process. The design chosen by the municipal committee contains a total of 11,905 square feet which the consultant has stated meets al conditions set out in the pretendering documents. Flock of Redwings arrive One of the earliest birds to arrive froin the south other than the Horned Lark la the Redwing Blackbird and they are back. Bill Bunting and I observed a flock of possibly thirty and above at the Cranberry Woodlot south of Whlitby on Sunday. At first it was only the cail of a single Redwing from the shrubbery but it wasn't long before the place seemied to be alive with Redwings. The bird is easy to identify with the Red wing patch. SWhat was surprising was the appearance of a couple of female Red Wings with the group of males. It has always been my understanding that the males first arrive to setup the home quarters before the female arrives ta look over the home turf. Perhaps the females were flot taking any chances on the loss of their mate in this case. We did meet up with another birder who made laim that the flock had a number of Rusty Blackbirds but was unable in the end to point them out. One or two Rustys may have been possible but a number would bc most unusual. Perhaps this is an indication that spring is really on its way. Kristen McRae has been telling us that they have had a Redwing at their place during the winter and it makes regular trips to the bird feeder for its nourishinent. Both Donna and BI Bunting have, heard robins in the Village over the past week so spring is just around the corner. The Hensaîl firm's bid totalled $1,189,900 which was the highest bld received of the five bids. The closes bid was la the amount of $ 1,165,708.00 with less floor space. Ontario Hydro has agreed to provide soute $1.2 million for the new station to be located west of Bowmanville on the north side of Highway 2. The building ia intended to be completed prior to the end of the year and possibly in October. The municipality lias signed an agreement with hydro that the stationwill be Another indication of spring is the cuddling-up of Red Tailed Hawks. If not cuddling-up then they are certainly being seen in pairs for the most part. They are also in full colourful plumage at the present tiine, a sign of mating and soon to nest. Saturday afternoon had taken us close ta Presquile Park s0 we did pay the park a visit with the thought that some of the ducks may be returning somewhat earlier than mid March. The usual were active in diving, the Buffleheads,- Scoup, Golden Eyes and Old Squaws. A pair of Red Heads did catch our eye and possible were the vanguard of what is ta come later titis month. The Presquile trip was mucli more than ducks however and soniewhat of a surprise. The ice formation ran out into the lake and fromn appearance was of some depth. The interesting feature was the hundreds of inverted ice cones ranging in height froin six feet to close to twenty feet that ranged along the length of the shoreline. It could be seen that some of the ice cones had holes and appeared as little volcanos where the water had been forced up tlu'ough the cone ta spill over the edge as a volcano. Thisin itself was reward enough for the visit ta the park The saine features were not seen at the lake front in the Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering area. The other feature of the Presquile extravaganza was the cleanliness of the display, pure white. Nature has many wonderful ways in which to re- veal itself. __ ,ýt for Orono team in 10 years Fvamiey Auto in Quarter Finals play Orono) Arena Sunday In OMHA Atomn action in Bowmanvile Selects, and finally Bobcaygeon this past weekend, Peterboro's St. Johns.
