This will include a pair of cildren's skiis, which will be raffled off on Saîurday afiemnoon. On botb days ihere will be an abundance of prizes in 6 different categories, including sports bags, sweatshirts, sports eqnipment, a reflexology treairneni, and much much -more, all donated by local ladividuals or businesses. The best part of the Match and The Clarington Community Liaison Group bas been looking at the material at the Port Granby site and has laoked at it fror a variety of perspectives. We looked ai the possibility, of, blasting material with large quantities of lectricity sa that it wauld becomne solidified or glass like. Vitrification ibis is called. ýAItbough ibis bas neyer been __îe we had ta look ai th e possibility since people from Our area have asked for that. They have asked, "Could the material bc lefi where it is?" The answer is. not in uts preseni state. It can nai be left in the site the way it is rigbt now, so something has wo bc done and tbat was one of the possible areas that we wanted ta examine. Win is that you compete only against yourself, trying wo match the sarne time on la second down- bll run as your first mun. It is not a race1 for speed, s0 even beginning skiiers have a good chance of winning. There are six categories for- participants: Pee- Wee (13 and under) boys and girls; Juniors (13 ta 18) boys and girls; and 18 and over, male and female. A total of 18 prizes will be given away eacb day. The cost ta enter is $4.00 per persan. Al proceeds will be donated ta SAGA. Corne ont and have some good fun on Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20, ai the Oshawa Ski Club, 1 1 a.m. ta 2 p.m. bath days. Registration starts at 9 a.m. The second thlag that we did, is we looked at what if it could be solidifled using a grout or cernent produce so that the wbole arca would becomne one solid cernent block, Again, this has been done on small scale operations but neyer on the large scale operation that we are looking at for Port Grnmby. Ibe third method was ta put a cap over the whole thing and keep it. That was ruled ont almost immediately because the material is eroding and a cap would not stop the erosion. The erosion cames of course from the bottom up througb the boitom of the cliffs- and a cap would not help at al, it wonld stili continue to slide lato Lake Ontario. Ther efore we looked at a fourth idea, which was the excavation of the material and looking at all the different ideas and concerns that have been expressed by people in the past it seems to be the preferred metbod of dealing with the material. It would bc the most cost effective method, it is cheaper than any of the other methods. It would be the best solution in the long terni, since uts gone and therefore the theory would be in fact becdean enough and nathing further would need ta be done. It is, alsoa method that is well known, bas been practiced over and over again by a number of companies and wii 'h some examination of the details could be applied ta the Port Granby site. Therefore we recommend ai this trne thai ibis metbod be used, that the material be excavated and moved to a new site. The new site that is stili the theoretical site (no final site bas been found) but the communities in the north are looking at possible locations. They are narrowing down their number of options to corne up with one preferred site and a method of storing the material there. Much work needs to bc done yet, both here and in the northem potential host community, but we are working on it. We are very pleased with the work that the people in the northern communities are doing, they are working very bard au a very difficuli task. However, we are confident that they will continue with tbe work and that they will find an answer to our common problem. The War Amps Higb school students in the Northumberland and Clarington Board of Education system may well have ta find their own transportation ta summer school this year. The provincial Ministry of Education recently announced thai the ministry was cutting grants for transportation to summer school courses. The local. board does not operate summer school for higb, scbool students. Iu purchases the services from schools in the Durham Region, Peterborough area and in the Hasting area. Tbis means considerable busing for those students in the North umberland-Clarington school sysuem. The local board states it will petition the minislry ta reconsider the elimination of the transpor- tation grant. ln the meantime it does look as if students will have ta pay for their own transportation if they intend to attend summer scbool. Tbis is thesecond time lnaa year ibat provincial cuts bas affected summer school pragrams.. Last spring the ministry cnt grants for elementary summer schools. As a result of ibis cut last year the local board did not provide remedial and enricbnient prograins for elementary students last summer. The education committee of the local board bas considered summer school again prior to this point with a number of options being possible consideration. Al but one of the options has parents paying for attendance at a possible summer school. Tbe cost per students bas been set from $100 to $200 based on an- enrolment of 500- to 1000 students.
