The planned Beef Barbecue, being held at the Orono Park on Wednesday, August 14th is part of a fundraising prograin by the Orono Arena'Improvement and Projects Commitice to raise funds for improvements at the Orono Arena and Community Centre. Tbe committee is anticipating the paving of a portion of the parking lot at Uic Orono Arena, a project wbicb could get underway this faîl if ail goes well witb their fundraising events. The past weekend was one of great delight for Uic art enthusiast througb the promotion of an art show and saie at the Art Loft at R.D. Mortons on Uic 6Ui uine of Clarke and a second similar sbow (Continued page 13) Even tbough the snow bas not melted yet, work bas already been going on to improve the quality of the umpires in Clarington. Working undertbe proposed new format for recreational and rep bail in the area, umpires in tbe area wil be given a voice on the new executive of basebail. Groups representing Bowmanville, Courtice, Orono, Newcastle and Tyrone have agreed to work together in dealing with ail issues surrounding the tbird teain on the field. In preparation, tbey have formed their own association and elected Wayne Lowry as their representative. Mr. Lowry and several senior umpires have been developmng a constitution, planning for the registration and training of umpîres and are setting up a program to provide a better communications between their members and tbe other basebal interest groups. At their first meeting, they established several goals for the association. Uniformity of qualifications, pay and rules was one of the first items accepted. A better recruitment and training program was also suggested. As mentioned above, it was also decided that they had to speak as one voice to tbe other basebal interest groups. Providing better equipment through bulk buying and better protection from abuse were also mentioned at the meeting. Mr. Lowry and Ken Key have been in contact with neighbouring associations and the O.B.A. seeking belp witb the training and supervision of umfpires. Ihis and the'decision to have ail umpires witb O.B.A. certification is the first step in upgrading the umpires.
