Tbose in attendance were told te battie against cuts in services that affected ail members of the comnmunity. It was stated that public sector workers were being severely demoralized over the tbree years social contract. Sid Ryan, Ontario president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees said lie was getting a consistent message from members that they arecready te strike over legislated cut-backs. Two walk off with stamps Two men walked out of the Bowmanville Post Office witb a grand total of $ 1200.00 in stamps last week. The tw.o waited until the clerk looked away when tbey picked up a one foot tail box and left th post office. Board to provide student busing Trustees- of the Durham Separate School Board dropped their plan te dut busing of student who lived witbin 1.6 km of the school in whicb students attended. Over 100 parents anned with petitions, placards, police reports won the day with the majority of the trustees cbanging their minds. Chairperson of the committee said that they bad flot addressed the issue. The committee was formed as some students were being bused within the 1.6 kmn of the schools while others had te walk. The committee was appointed to address these inequities. Unemployment rate climbs in Oshawa area The Oshawa and area unemployment rate increased in February although it decreased across most of the coun rry. The jobless rate mncrease in the Oshawa/Wbitby area to 15.1 percent from 14.7 percent in January. The national unemployment rate dropped to 11. 1 percent in February. Memorial parking charge increasing As of the end of March the parking fee of $1.00 will be increased te $2.00 for use of the Memorial Hospital parking lots. The $1 .00 fee has been in effect since 1988. Donate meal fund to welfare Northumberland County politicians in approying their 1994 budget cut the $8.00 me al allowance for its 29 members for each meeting. The subsidy for tbe councillors' meal would have totalled $6,300. This mfoney is now te bc directed toward social assistance programs sucb as emergency dental work. She now resides at Riverview Manor in Peterborough but did live in ber own home in Millbrook until she reached the age of 100 years. The usual birthday party was not held thi s year due to failing healtb. $1.7 million to fight dumps The province% Interim Waste Authority has approved a total of $1.7 million to be sbared between, four municipalities and six individual groups to wage their fight against tbree major landfil sites Of which one would be located in Pickering. The province had previously handed out $1.5 million for those commenting on the short list of proposed dump sites. The Municipality of Pickering will receive $85,0'(0 while the Pickering group of Citizens Together for the Environment wil receive $ 160,000.
