It was explaîned by Michael Walters, general manager of the' Ontario Landfill Division of Laidlaw that reclamation is a process involving the excavation of material from the existing landfill for recovery, re-use and te recycle. At the samne time it would provide additional space at the landflll for new garbage from Durham Region and provide the opportunity to make environ- mental upgrades te the site. The company hopes that the project could get underway by April Ist after receiving approval from the Ministry of the, Environment and from the Municipality of Claringten. Mr. Walters said the procedure would improve the existing site te secure a higher level of environmental protection and that of ground and surface water. It was aise stated that the project was -cost effective allowing approximately twe yeas of additional capacity while still remaining in the saine area as now existe. It was said that non- hazardeus waste, residential, commercial and industrial, would be trucked back to the landfill from the Durham Regional area. It was further stated that test drilling had been undertaken at the'south mound and that no hazardous waste was found. "There is nothing nasty in the site", said Mr. Walters. He also pointed out that the Newtonville landflll site is still an active site. t was said that Laidlaw monitors the water in Graham Creek twice a year and have always found that the water quality have met the provincial standards and that the landfill has had no measureable impact on the creek. Those in attendance were told that smell and noise would be con trolled and that the project would take some five and a half months at a cost of $1 million. The material in the landfill would be excavated, placed on conveyors for sorting where items as electrical appliances, paint cans, tires and other recyclable items will be removed and also the soul content. The soil excavated wil bc store-d for later use. The items te be recycled will be trucked off the site. Through this installation the company hopes to further protect ground and surface water in the area of the landfill. .(Continued page 7) Two new businesses are moving into downtown Orono and for those involved it is busy days and nights wall papering and painting in preparation for their openings.
