Orono Atoms up 2 and 0 in Ontario Semi-finals In OMHA Atom semi-final playoff action Orono's Family Auto Sales travelled to Mactier Saturday, March 19 for gaine one of the series., Family Auto took a 1-0 record back to Orono as tbey coasted to a-6-2 win over the Mactier Kings. There was no scoring in the first period as both teanis played a cautious defensive style with the Kings holding a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Play opened up however in the middle frame as Omono outscored Mactier. 4-2 after two periods. Family Auto added two more in the third period wo secure the win. Orono hosted the Kings in game two Sunday afternoon March 20 to a capacity crowd of local supporters. Family Auto didn't disappoint their fans as they skated to a 2-0 victory over Mactier to go up two games to none in the best-of-five series. Surprisingly the Kings held the edge in shots on goal, but Orono netminder Ryan Leddy "shut the door" on the visitors to earn the shut-out. In the game, Family Auto did all their scoring in the middle frame to decide the outcome. Following this game, the organizers held- a skills competition, featuring one shooter and one goalie fmom each of the 8 teanis. The Bowmanville contestants, selectedl at random, were Andrew Fracz and Justin Andrews. Andrew gave it a valiant effort but was unable to tap the keg, as it were, against the stingy goaltenders. This game featured some nice passing, particularly by Andrew Fracz to spring Adam Culi on a breakaway, and later by Adam himself to-set up Matt Best. Optimist Tyke Selects his 5th hat-trick of the year. The fmnal score was 9-2, and hardest- working-player honours were awarded to Chris Boyce. The "A" Championship game was strictly no contest, witb the B.R.H.L. Optimists scoring a 10- 0 knockout over the Tweed Selects. The hardest-working- player award went to Bryan Barchard, who had 2 goals and 2 assists. Bryan also accepted tbe championship plaque on bebaif of the team. Honourable mention goes to Adam Culi, wbo bad 4 goals, and Matt Mitchell, wbo had a goal and 3 assists. Tournament Statistdcal Story met another old foe from Uxbridge. This time our boys soundly avenged a previous loss and tie by defeating Uxbridge 4- 0. The gamne was typically tight checking with a low shot count. There did not seem to be much open ice to be found, but what was there was found by Stephen Cornelissen, wbo scored two goals and added an assist witb an exceptional pass to set up Mike Richardson. Mike had Previouslv set up Stepben's first goal on tbe sanie shift to give Bowmanville a 2-0 first-period lead. They held this lead until the third period, when Cornelissen chased down a clearing pass by Corey Oliver to score bis second goal. Bryan Barchard closed out the scoring on a play started by Gord Baird, who played forward and picked up his first scoring point. Mike Richardson also assisted on the play. Justin Andrews was perfect on all 7 shots in collecting the shutout. The B.R.H.L. Tyke Selects will be hosting tbeir annual Optimist Club Tournament on Saturday, Marcb 26th at the Orono Arena.
