t~ -Orono Weekly Times, W.dnemd.y, Match 30, 1094 The ereal story tellers ai Kirby A story about Joe Camel and his girl friend Josephine fromn Gord Mils wr p3 uihafMIâ Have you driven through Cincinnati? If you have, did you notice the large bil-board on the right side of the road, as you approach the City driving south? Okay, then, I'm talking about the Camel Human. He walks on his back legs, like a human, but hes only got three fingers on each hand, and 1 would bet bis breath smells like an old tennis shoe. 0f course, I'm speaking of the advertisement that features Joe Carnet,'the Pied Piper of tobacco whose buibous snout is known ta millions of chikiren in the United States. Joe is an advertising phenomenon. Everywhere he goes, he spreads the joy of smoking cigarettes. Since his creation, just a mere seven years ago, Joe Carnet has become a celebrity - world class! lii cârccrïhil becoffleîo successful, that RJR/Nabisco recently decided ta give him a girlfriend, Josephine. Now they can wheeze together in smoke- f illedl bliss until lung cancer, emphysema or heart disease does the pair of them in. I find it quite amazing, that a haif-camel, haif-human, can successfully addict gullible, naive teenagers ta a powerful drug, and then bask in credibility. Yet, aur government's public health campaign against smoking, against selling cigarettes in drug stores, and the like, is seen in some quarters as uterfering with the business process. Wow. And we arc supposed ta be crazy? This group of Kirby Centennial students were contestants ini a recent starytelling event at the school.
