Mr. Veltri suggests that the project be financed through the Ontario/Canada Infrastructure plan. He said a joint effort of al three levels of governrnent could bring sanitary sewers to Newtonvile a reality. Mr. Veltri further states that he along with other developers invested huge ýsums of money in Newtonville. He states he invested some $700,000 te assist, in bringing municipal water 10, Newtonville. "I have had 10 sit back without any benefit or development of my land because provincial guidelines will net now allow any development unless the lot size is no less than 2 acres." Mr. Veltri said this guideline is flot acceptable economically. Mayor Harare said the letter should bc directed to the Region of Durhamn who have jurisdiction over water and sewers. She also said that MU. Veltri and other developers who owned land in Newtonville did provide funding te bring water te Newtonville. She said that since that time the province has changed the size of lots from one acre te two acres and that net likely they would ever be built on now. The letter is being referred bo the Region of Durhamn. Hxolds off decision as to Laidlaw mining plan At therequest of Laidlaw Waste Systems the municipality of Clarington bas referred a number of recommendations as to their reclarnation project at the Newtonville durnp te the General Purpose committee meeting on April Sth. Laidlaw said they were unaware that the issue was before council and did wish 10 address coundil on the project. The General Purpose comnmittce of March 21st recommended that Laidlaw did require a rezoning of the lands te undertake the reclamation and additional waste disposai.* The committee further recommended Ébat 'the municipality request the Ministry of the Environment 10 require a hearing before the Environmental Asscssment Board. Laidlaw Waste Systems bas held an open house at their Newcastle, Village office at which Urne Uiey said they would be starting the operation as of April Ist and that the project would be completed within five months. Rcegion seeks federal Institute -for Oshawa It was upsetting reading for Gary Herrema, Regfional Chair- man - the unexipected announce- ment by MNP Alex Shepherd of a Durhami Region bid te obtain Uic relocation of the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing Tech- nology (LAIMi) 10 Oshawa. The Region of Durhama is onc of about eight centres in Ontario seeking the facility in their municipalities. Herrema has blasted Shepherd for his annoucernent which is felt could hurt Durham application for Uic facility. IAMT is part of the National Research Council in Ottawa. >The Region of Durham has been working on a proposaI to gain Uic fadility since November. Herrerna feels Uiat Uic Shepherd announcernent could stan a bidding war for Uic facility. He said'this is Uic last Uing that the National Research Council would want.
