It bas been reported that the board's energy savings plan has saved $393,000 in billings after one year. That amount is more than $ 100,000 that hati been estimateti at the beginning of last year. In 1993 the board entercd into a seven year 'agreement, guaranteed energy performance improvement contract with Tescor Energy Services to develop low-cost energy initi- atives for 27 schools, convert Bowmanville High Scbool from electri city to gas andi replace the cooling andi lighting equipment and convert lighting of 58 other buildings now owned by the 'board. This seven year contract is costing the board $5.43 million of which amount Ontario, Hydro is to pay $1.24 anti $1.7 million depending on the energy savings. The board will pay the rest of the 'cost. If the savings continuing as now being reported the boa rd expects the project to pay for itself withm six years. Because the lighting conversion at the 58 buildings bas just been completeti, the board bas yet to determine those energy savings. It is expected however that the savings in this segment of the operation coultibk in the area of $175,000 each year. Ron Sudds, superintentient of business said he was tielighted to sec the project completed aheati of sehedule and that the results, are sbowing to be better than expecteti. It is estimateti that the project employed 30 traties people andi injecteti $700,000 into the local economy. News report On March twenty-third the Newcastle Lions held their regular meeting with thirty members and two guests attending. Jirn Collicut, an invited guest and Mayor Hamre, the guest speaker. The dinner of ham, scalloped potatoes and homemade pies was served by the Providence Shaws Womens Institute. After dinner the ch airperson, President Lion Tony Clements asked Lions Mike Carter to introduce the guest speaker. Lion Mike commented that Mayor Hamre, well known by most of the members required very littie introduction. The Mayor reviews 1993 and gave the audience a look ahead to the coming year. Many exciting things are happening in Clarington this year and she shared a few of those with the Lions. Some projects she touched on were, die Waterfmont Trail, the new firehail and the Officiai Plan. The Mayor also spoke on the wage and hiring policies of the Municipality and the plan to upgrade staff skills. Also the hiring of Todd Letts the new E.D.O. and Bill Stockwell the new C.D.O. After a lengthy question penîod. chairman Tony called on Lion Frank Hoar to thank May or Hamnre and present hier with a gift of appreciation. A draw was held for a beautiful calendar frame, made and donated by Lion Sierd DeJong. Lucky wmnner was Lion Roy Hopkins. Lion Gord Moulton reminded the club Ithat a light bulb sale would be ready to go by early April. This wil be a package of ten Long Life bulbs consisting to 40W, six 60W and two 100W bulbs. The package will seil for $ 10.00 and profits will go to SightFirst. Club elections were held andi ail office were filleti. Installation ceremonies wil take place at the Iast meeting in June.
