Optimist Tyke Selects back winning On Easter Sunday, the Bowmanville Optimist Tyke Selects travelled to Scarborough's Stephen Leacock Arena for a date with the Cedar Hil Selects, who had defeated Bowmanville in a tournament back on January l6th. Coach Jim Barchard pinpointed that loss as the moment when die boys started to believe in themselves, leading to a run of great hockey prior to the let down in our own Optimist Tyke Tournament last week. So after a pre-game pep talk from the Coach designed to reawaken the concept- of team play and hard work, the boys played inspired hockey and defeated Cedar Hill 9-1. The teain put on as fine an exhibition of passing as we have seen ail year, creating many scoring opportunities and enabling them to outsboot their opponents 30 -9. Coach Barchard juggled the line-up for this match, moving Matt Mitchell back to bis former right-wing position and placing Chris Boyce on the defense, where he bas played regularly with his house league team. The and lan Knox (#14) to balve the Shoppers advantage. Early in the third period, Shoppers rang one off Vanstone's post but that was as close as they would get for the remainder of the gaine. Witb tbree minutes left in the game, J&M took a big chance pulling their goalie for the pay-off when Evan Moore (#9) connected from Doug Garlick (#5) with 1:50 remaining. Final score J&M - 2; Shoppers - 2. As a result of the 3-1-0 record J&M compiled in the play-off round robin, they finished first and qualified te play Shoppers', Drug Mart in the best of 3 for the 'A' final BRHL Minor Tyke tille. Good Luck, J&M!!! move seemed te be a positive one for both players, with Chris utilizing bis defensive instincts smartly and Matt adding some creativity to the offence. In spite of the offensive output, the early star of the gaine was goalie Gord Baird, wbo made an outstanding breakaway save on his first shot against, which gave the team a lift. Gord would make another beautiful save in the second period before giving way to Justin Andrews. Justin was, himself, tested on his first shot and met the challenge. Both goalies received typically strong support from defence stalwarts Andrew Fracz, Corey Oliver and Rene Cartier. Tbere was a trio of 2-goal shooters in this gaine, including Bryan Barchard, Stephen Cornelissen and Adam Cull. Cornelissen's fîrst goal was set up by a beautiful pass from Barchard, followed by some slick stickhandling and a solid sbot to the top corner. Barchard's first goal flnished off an excellent rush by the Captain, while his second (assisted by Daniel Michael) bit the post before being knocked in by the goalie. Cull's first goal came on one of bis wicked wrist shots, after Matt Mitchell had worked bard along the boards te get him the puck. Corey Oliver also drew an assist on that play. Cull's second goal was assisted by Andrew Fracz, who used bis uncanny anticipatory powers to C Clarington Computer Clearance Centre SALES & SERVICE Quality New & Used Computers 161 King Street East Bowmanville - 697-3059 force a turnover at hie Cedar Hill blue line and gend Adam in alone.
