Interest shown for composters Cindy Kindree at Rekker Garden Ltd., west of Bowmanville, displays three separate com- posters that proved of interest over the past week-end. Tbe Waste Management department of the Region of Durham provided information and belpful hints to composting garden and kitchen waste last Saturday. The event arranged to be held at the Rekker location is part of an overall plan wo increase interest in waste reduction. At Rekker Garden Ltd. residents of the area can purcbase, from a cboice of three types of composters, at a bargain and subsidized price of $ 15.00. The composters were somewbat of a bot item on Saturday with 60 Soil savers sold along with 83 Earth Savers , Il bio-bins, the wooden form of composter. The $15.00 price continues for the Durham Region composters at Rekkers and the information folders and phamplets also continue to be avaîlable. They do describe, in simple terms, the proper use of the composters and the great advantages that are gained througb their use. Two question needs for reflectingpKol, Mfichael Patrick, speaking on bebaîf of the members of the Mayor's Task Force and likewise Garnet Rickard, a member of the Skate '88 committee questioned the expenditure of funds for a reflecting pool and landscaping at the Bowmanville Recreational Centre. Mr. Patrick said even witb the use of the Federal/Provincial Infrastructure funds it was going to cost the municipality one- quarter of a million dollars. The total prîce of the landscaping project bas been estimated at $750,000. 0f this amount the -ý,unicipality would bave to 1-ovide $250,000 if approved by the local council and the otber two levels of govemment. Mr. Patrick said the plan bad some economical aspect and that tbe beautification plan was a one- shot deal . "but", he said, "on balance it is a bad deal". be further stated tbe plan would not provîde long-term employment and there would be a cost of maintenance as far as the bindscaphg municipality was concemned. Mr. Patrick said he was speaking on behaîf of the business community and asked tbat the proposal bc reconsîdered. Mr. Garnet Rickard also spoke on the issue and did ask what was being proposed? who proposed it? who wants it? and where is the money coming fromn? He said that Skate '88 stili bad some tag ends to complete and tberv was still money to be tumed over. He stated that in total the commîttee bas raised some $1 .7 million. He also questioned bow the fountain was going to rejuvenate the local economy. 'We bave neyer seen anyone succeed by borrowing money or purposes other tban for making money", be said. Mayor Hamre in answer to both speakers said council had wo act quicly in making application for Infrastructure Funds. She said they were notified one day and were expected to mnake application the following day.
