High schools froas across Canada will be competing this year'schainpionships. Academiîc Decathlon is a (Comtinued pqe 2) Mayor Diane Hamre assisted by Mrs. Florence Hooper executed the sod turning for the new Clarington Fire Department Headquarters in Bowmanville. The headquarters is being constructed on a site west of the Bowmanville Recreation Centre with entrance onto Highway No. 2. The building and equipaient is being financed, by Ontario Hydro for' $1.2 million with a completion date in late October and definitely prior to the beginning of the new year. Mayor Hamre welcomed the many in attendance for the occasion. In speaking of Councillor Ken Hooper who recently passed away she said he had always wanted and worked towards the provision of an improved fire protection system for Bowmanville. Mayor Hamre said that the municipality would be naming a street in BowmanvilleHooper Square in memory of Councillor Hooper. With the completion of the new headquarters and station for Bowmanville the municipality will be providing the first 24-hour service using fuil-time fire- fighters. Ontario Hydro is paying the extra cost for ten years of adding the additional full-time staff so as to provide twenty-four hour service. Mayor Hamre said the new station and manpower will meet all the requirements for the municipality as well as for Ontario Hydro and the Atomic Energy Control Board who are also regulators in the operation of the hydro station It was stated that aIl parties involved in the process of developing the agreement for improved fire protection worked well together. Gord Milis, M.P.P. for Durham East also spoke at the sod tumning ceremony congratu- lating the municipality and others involved in the new development for fire protection in Cla rington.
