From Around Home (Continued from page i11) immediately starting looking for a place to manufacture anmunition. With little delay Canada was chosen and within weeks the site of some 2800 acres in south Pickering was purchased for the manufacturing of ammunition. The area, close to Toronto, did have one of the larger sources of available workers. In February of 1940 surveyors moved in to mark out the new plant and all the facilities that then were needed to accom- modate the operation. The buildings were well on their way in early 1941 with 2000 carpenters reporting for work each day. In one case a 50,000 square foot building was completed along with painting within twenty-four hours. In early 1941 production had started on this most labour intensive job of manufacturing ammunition for the war efforts. The first shipment, although: small, was made to Britain in June of 1941. By 1943 the plants in the area were in full operation continuing into 1944 and with a total close down in 1945.' In the meantime it meant the construction of a huge steam plant, a delivery of one million gallons of water a day. There was also the matter of 9000 employees at the peak of production many of whom came fro-n the western and eastern parts of Canada. The buildings were numerous including residential accommo- dation for 3000 by 1941, a large community centre, a small hospital, a steam plant for the al needed energy and heat, an in- take of water of upwards of one million gallons a day. AUI these activities came under the duties of the Defense Industries Limited, (DRL) formed by the federal government of the day. There was also the social faction which came under the umbrella of the DRL to look after including the setting up of a newspaper, The Commando", community hall activities with such as Mart Kenney coming to play for dances. The big recreation hall was in operation 16 hours day. t is interesting on how the area by Helen MacDonald With the> warmner weather on the horizon, Canadians hav e begun the process of stripping down their clothes. Heavy coats, boots, hats are being replaced with the stuf of spring --- jackets, baseball caps, shoes, sneakers and took on the name of Ajax. With the population mushrooming in the area it soon became apparent to DEL that the Pickering Village post office was not ad equate for the needs of the DIL operation.' The federal agency then had their own Post Office established but of course it would need a mailing address. Through the means of a competition sponsored by DRL the namne Ajax was chosen for historical reasons. 1The name came from the Battle Cruiser Ajax that had been involved in the early days of the war with a conflict with the Grand Spee, the pride of the Qerman navy. The Grand Spee finally scuttled itself in one of fiords in Norway on December 1939. Forty-five years later umbrellas. Already, some have dared to don their shorts, chancing their flesh on cool spring winds and main. I ýspend none of my time wondering at the seasonal fashion, but- a couple of weeks ago, an article on re-designed following the name of Ajax coming to the area 'the municipality had a population of 45,000 which has since grown larger. The DIL operation made bombs , depth charges, land mines, trench mortars, artillery shelîs and hand grenades. Most of the buildings are now gone with some buildings being fired due to contamination while others, reinforced concrete, were toppled over and buried. Ajax is a young community as far as years are concerned and camne about due to Canada's war effort, a few years over fifty years ago. Residents can now enjoy their uninhibited walk, along the lakefront. Calvin Klein men's undies caught my attention. NOT because of the male models wearing them, although they did look fine in their underwear, but because of the women wearing them. No, women haven't suddenly developed a need for that front slot se they can have a pee. Nor are they wearing them because they can no longer contain that deeply primai desire (as Freud would suggest) for the thing that fits in that front siot. Nor are women becoming terribly confused about their sex and its biological processes as we reach even -greater heights in our search for equality which might have led to a longing for the social benefits of urinaIs in public washrooms: "So, where do you go to get your oil checked?" Yet, the latest fashion statement is that of women wearing men'sunderwear --- but, girls, don't hide them in your pants. No, siree. Wear them as tops. Thats right---tops. So grab a pair of men's undies from the laundry basket (boxers wont do!) and a pair of scissors, and I walk you, through this. Tumn undies upside down. Cut a neck hole in the crotch. Put over your head, slide arms through the Ieg holes and voila! --- a very cheap tank top. Or, for the athletic types, a sports bra. But, beware--- preliminary tests reveal a lack of support for the more well- endowed. I g uess men's underwear corne with certain limitations in size! Now, take out some ribbons, some buttons, some rhinestones, some upholstery tassels for trim and enhance your handpainted designs and drawings. There you have it --- a cool, fashionable summer top. And, as you walk the streets of Orono with a pair of well-trimmed, colourful men's briefs pulled over your torso, heads WILL turn at your BOITOMS style UP!
