This iegislation, which was supposed ta have received Third Reading and the Royal Assent in short order, was ground te a halt by the Conservative members, who used a series of time wasting pariiamentary procedures. Their posturing was te prevent passage of part of Bill 119 asit related to generic-packaging. Generic- packaging is seen an an important roll in the reduction, of the sale of cigarettes, ta aur yauth. 0f course this is something the cigarette companies don't want ta see happen, for obviaus reasons. Yet again, the Provincial Conservative Party have showed that their panderi'ng ta big- business, and in this casé ta the multi-national cigarette campanies, is more important than stepping the sales of deadly cigarettes ta aur yaung people. I have no doubt whatsoever, that their despicabie tactics, will bc rewarded with electian campaign donations, in their quest for power, and their fashioning of a meaner Ontario. Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, each in their own fashian, and by their pique poiitics, made the US. and Britain a mean saciety. Taday, the hooligans and thugs roaming the streets of Engiand, cammitting crimes galore, are known as "Thatcher's Children". The aftermath of the creatian of a mean, greedy, society that lacked any compassion for anyone not of Thatcher's ilk. As most of the regular readers of my Queen's Report know, I arn not a supporter of the Toronto Sun. I have, from time ta time, complained of the way they fashianed attacks, without any cause, against the NDP. Sa you wiii understand how pieased I, was iast week, ta read in the Tarante Star that my view of the Tarante Sun was shared by their reporter, Rosie DiManna. Ms. DiManna, speaking of the Toronto Sun said, "a newspaper that views the worid in stark images of black and white, and which marshais much of its resources toward inflicting that divisive philosophy on the reading public. A newspaper that vilifîes its perceived enemies, be they immigrants or gays or anyone who has ever voted NDP." Brava Rosie. As I have mentioned in one of my previaus calumns, my canstituency staff spend an incredible amnount of time helping' people, with their Worker's Compensation probiems. Last week, we even had a request from someone now living in Portugal, te ansist them. Sa you can see, I was interested in the announcemnent of aur intention ta reform the WCB. We get the blame for the mess the WCB is presentiy in, althaugh the' prablems are far from new. We are the only government that bas the "guts" ta deal with the probiem, yet we wiii stilli Ret biamed for ail the ils. I haven't any doubt at ail that somne wouid iay the blame on us for the tumbiing down of the Walls of Jericho! The five point package for refarm includes a new Board of Directors, with changed leadership at the WCB. There wil be a stronger emphasis on rehabilitating injured warkers and getting them back ta work quickiy and safeiy. Cast saving measures wili be introduced ta change pension indexing and government directed targets for the new Board of Directors. Speciai indexing protection at full CPI for the most vulnerabie injured workers and an additionai $200 on the pensions of aider injured workers who receive or have received benefit supplements. Finaliy, a Rayai Commission will look at the future of Ontario's Workers' Compensation system. i dan't know if ail of this wil help us with aur work ioad of WCB cases. Speaking for my staff, who bear the brunt, we sincereiy hope so. Ta those employers who have written ta me, asking if the gavernment is prapasing the expansion of workers' compensation caverage, I can say NO. The issue of coverage underthe WCB will be addressed by the Royal Commission. The Royal Commission wiil cansist of a Chief Commissioner and two side Commissioners representing labour and business respectiveiy. They will report their findings by December 1995. The refarms will save a minimum of $18 billion from the WCB's unfunded liabiity. Some weeks back, I told you that Premier Bob had asked me te came forward with a plan, whereby the Ontario Govemrment couid officialiy recagnize the 50th Anniversary of 'D' Day. Plans inciuded the possibiiity of havîng Darne Vera Lyn take Part in the celebrations. I did track down her agent in Landon, however, she bas ather arrangements. Despite this initial se tback, plans are now going ahead smoothiy. Our efforts wiii join with a parade starting at Nathan1 Phillips Square, ta Union Station where the Lt. Qovernar of Ontario wiil take the salute along with the Premier. From there, the veterans (over 1,500 sa far) wiii be bussetu dawn to Ontario Place for another parade at HMSC Hadia. Celebrations wil continue after the parade, in Ontario Place andi at the Forum. Many details remain te be iraned out. We will have a fly-past, and hopefuiiy this wiii include vintage WW2 aircraft. Al af this wifl take place on Sunday, June Sth. More details later. -At the risk of making this week's column ail miiitary, I met with Rayai Canadian Legion, Ontario Commandi officiais last week at Queen's Park, in my role as Chair of the Ontario Government's Veteran's Comrnittee. We were jained at the meeting with the Minister of Heaith, who iistened te a proposal Durham residents in tune wi*th spring composter sale Durham Residents are invited ta Newcastle Lumbers' Composter Sale Day on Saturday, April 30th from 9 amn. to 3 p.m., te purchase a composter for just $15. The complete proposai hinges on agreement being made with the Ministry of Consumer & Commercial Relations, whereby break open tickets (Nevada) are operated by The Royal Canadian Legian Branches in Ontario. Meetings on this issue are at present angoing. I look forward to an early resolution. It has been said, that there are only two adjectives used in Engiand. "Super" for anything that is good. "Bloody" for anything that is bad. Until next week - examine what is said, not him who speaks. are encouraged to drop by with any questions they may have, or to purchase a second composter.
