Shoppers epened the scering less than one minute into the game. Shortly after, Deug Garlick (#5) got away a shot that went over the Shoppers' netininders stick and was headed te the goal, until one of Shoppers' defence sceoped it eut before il crossed the goal line. With five minutes left in the first period, Garlick got another one past the goalie, but it bit the post and careened ouI. At 3:42, Derek Sellars ($3) managed te gel one past the Shoppers' goalie on the short side from a Sharp angle tying up the score at 1. Assist froin Mark Kelly ($8) and Doug Garlick ($5). In the second period, boîli teains had several good scoring opportunities but Brent Vanstone ($7), in net for J&M and bis Shoppers counterpart managed to turu aside everytbing that came their way. As the third periofi opened, tie again Jason Geraldi ($2) was stoned on what looked like a sure goal. Shortly after, Shopper managed to put another one past Brent Vanstone in net for J&M, but it was called back due to a delayed offside. At 7:19 left in the gaine, Shoppers took an elbowing penalty, but J&M's power play unit neyer really got on track and B r e n t Vanstone had t0 corne up with a big save on Shoppers' shorthanded effort. Near the end of the period, Garrett MacDonald (#1 1), had a good scoring chance, but the puck hit a Shoppers' leg and went wide. Brent Vanstone was called upon 10 make one big savebefore the game ended. Moments laler, Evan Moore ($9) was teeing up a good one on the Shoppers' net just as the buzzer went, endîng tbe gaine and frustrating Moore's opportunily. Final score J&M - 1-, Shoppers -1. Aiml Canadians vs Orono iNovice playoffs Rougbley Novice bouse- league bave but one more burdie 10 gel over 10 capture the "C" Cbampionship., They began their playoff round against Al Canadian Awards on Sunday, April 17 in Orono. Because they bad the best record after the round robin they were given home ice advantage in the best of tbree series. AIl Canadian was the only tearn 10 beat Orono in the round robin, s0 everyone was anxious about Ibis game. All Canadian opened the scoring at 14:24 of the first as Orono looked a litîle sloppy in the first few shifts. Orono came back to lie il at 3:23 as $12 J.P. Pisani came out of his slump 10 score unassisted, Oronos #16 Jeff Mercier, assisîed by #8 Jesse Price put thern up 1 at 1:47. At 13:02 of the second, A.C.A. lied the gaine and it looked like it would be a tight match until Orono exploded for 4 goals in the second period. $4 Jeff Dickinson slapped il pasî the goalie on a rebound shot by #*8 Jesse Price froin $15 Tyler Gregg on the point. At 4:01 #3 Michael Knapp noîcbed #*1 from #*4 Jeff Dickinson, Two minutes laler Knapp from 4#14 Jordin Beacocký scored bis seccond. Fasi skating and sheer deterinaption 10 gelth puck led îo #12 J.P. Pisani's second goal as he chascd down an A.C.a. player in his own end, stole the puck and scored. Early in the third #3 Michael Knapp was robbcd of his bat trick goal as il was called back because an'Orono player had slid mbt the net. Orono's J.P. Pisa'ni was flot t0 be robbed of bis hat trick as he scored at 7:08 of the third to end the scoring aI 7-2. In net for Orono was $1 Jeff Slemon wbo came up $1 for the teain wiîh some super saves througbout the game. The defence with the added man $6 Kienan Williams was tougli on the blueline and showed some offensive drive during the gaine. BRHLOptimists Tykes close season in Buffalo The Bowmanville Recreational Hockey League Optimisî Club Tyke Selecîs travelled to Buffalo for the April 15th weekend t0 compeîe in the "Sampastor Pepsi Invitational Hockey Tournament". This was the final tournament of the season, capping a long scbedule for these 6, 7 and 8-year-olds, inany of wbom played over 70 gamnes, including the bouse- league season, toumnaments.and playoffs. Il was exciîing for the boys to make the long 'trek tu Buffalo, book int a botel and, enjoy eacb others'company. Hopes were higli. However, Ilirougli a combination of bougli competition, bad bounces and untimely breakdowns, the teain came up short in their quest 10 win one more championship. t is, arguable that the large olympic- size ice surfaces made it difficult for the 'Selects 10 organize their Dufferin Aggies win With a record of 6-0 in the round robin, Dufferin Aggies faced MacGregor I.D.A. in the "A"' Championship. Coach Allun knew it would be a tough series and encouraged the boys to play hard but fair. Gaine one was played on -home ice in Orono on Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30. The hometown boys looked shaky in the opening period as it had been a whule sînce they had been on the ice. MacGregor's opened the sconing in the fist witb a goal at 3:22. t was not until 13:04 of the second that Orono got on thue board with a goal by #5 Chris Moffat, assisted by #14 Kyle Cox and #11i Andrew Bangay.' Great goaltending at botb ends kept the score îow but Orono was able to gel two quick goals late in the third to make it 3-1. Scoring for Orono was #10 Kyle Allun, assisted by #2 Ryan Fowler and #12 Colin Maitland also assisted by #2 Ryan Fowler. Maitland's goal proved to bc the winner as a needy MacOregors worked liard to score with 34 seconds left on the dlock. They continued 10 press but great goaltending by #18 Kevin Martin kept them froml tying the game and put Orono up 1-0 in a best of 3 series. forechecking game effcctively; it is arguable that the flood after two periods aliowed opposing îeams the opportunity t0 regroup and gel back in games that our boys were controlling. In the end, howevcr, the guys wcrc beaten by two very good tcams in two vcry hard fought games that could have gone cither way. It is a testament to the character of the B.R.H.L. Selects that they wcrc able t0 corne back in their third game, knowing the could flot reach the finals, and win their last game of the season. The Tyke Selects opened the Pepsi Tournament against the Niagara Falls Thunder, a big, strong team with a zest for body contact. Captain Bryan Barchard absorbed a particularly celiberate bit near the end of the first period, which was scoreless and featured but one shot on goal for cadi teain. The game was exciling, nonetheless, and Barchard returned in the Second period 10 score the game's first goal, assisted by Daniel Michael and Adam Cryderman. Bowmanville continued un take the game 10 Niagara Falls, ouîshooting them 7-3 in the period, but a late breakaway for the Thunder enabled them 10 lie the score, and then the flood carne, liîerally. The tide turned thereafter, and the Thunder carrîed the play 10 Bowmanville, scoring the winning goal on a goalmouth scrainble. The opposing coaches selected Bryan, Barchard as Bowmanville's MVP in the gaine. With the tournament operating on a point system (2 for a win, 1 for winning a period, .5 for tying a period), Bowmanville would need to corne up with a big second game to bave a shot at advancing (Continued page 5) Game 2 was played at Bowmanville Recreation Complex on Thursday, April 14 at 5:00. Orono looked more like themselves in tbe opening frame but MacGregor's knew it was do or die and carne ready to play. Orono's defence of #4 Bradley Griffin, #35 Ian Crasbley, #20 Cbris Boyce, #19 Brian Pisani and #4 Paul Richter had 10 play extra hard tbis game as Mac Gregor's #3 Rene Cartier and #7 Michael Richardson were gunning for goals. The first period was scoreless as Orono's Kevin Martin made several saves as did #1 Adam Cryderman who was bombarded by the line of $4 Matt Mitchell, $17 Steve Gregg and #9 Gregory Dunhain. t was early in the second when #5 Chris Moffat on a play froin $14 Kyle Allin and #35 Ian Crasbley backbanded a shot past the Mac goalie to go ahead 1-0. Seconds later, Kevin Martin made a beautiful glove save te keep Orono ahead. #19 Brian Pisani took a tripping penalty at 9:30 to stop a breakaway and Orono dominated wbile a man short. #1 1 Andy Bangay missed a sweeî one by inches and #12 Colin Maiîland's constant digging in the corners belped Orono keep control. MacGregor's did flot give up and scored at 3:20 of the third. MacGregor's pulled their goalie with 2 minutes left but were unable to tie the gaine giving the championship to the Orono boys. As the final buzzer went, the crowd cheered loudly as the coaches and players cleared the bench. Congratulations to the coaches Brian Allun, Gerry Martin, Fred Cox-and Blain Moffat for their patience and knowledge sharing with the boys. As a parent of one of the'players, I must say that it has been a fun winter in the stands sharing many a cold night with ail the other parents, grandparents and friends.
