Kîendal Hall News by Phyllis Lowery The past few weeks have been a busy time fer the Lodge mnembers of the tbree Lodges that meet at the Hall. Penny sales, planning for the June supper, and attending the R.W. Grand Lodge of Ontario Hast at Renfrew. Nine members fromn the Kendal Men's and Ladies' Lodge attended, the Sessions- were held at the Renfrew Inn and the members stayed there. The rooms were excellent and the service given by the staff there was also excellent, se quick te attend te any needs. The attendance for these sessions was also good, at one time someone took a count and said there were 200 ladies present. On Friday evening the Junior Orange Lodge from Smith Falls put on a Degree, prior to this meeting we were served a delicious Buffet Supper. After the Lodge meeting a dance was held. Ail sess ions of both the Ladies' and Men's Lodge were well attended and very interesting. Next year, the Sessions will be Community Liaison Group Updal by John Veldhuis The Clarington Community Liaison Group has been bard at work setting dlean-up criteria for tbe Port Granby low-level radio active waste site. The committee bas come up witb two possible scenarios. One where we dig up the material that is presently located there te background level. A list of background levels and parts per millions (ppmn) bas been composed witb a great deal of certainty and also we have a list of regulatory limits proposed by varieus agencies. This is the lower and upper-bounds or lower and upper limita that we can use for our dlean-up criteria. The lowest of course is background, we cannot go any lower than background. Below that we would simply be digging up more and more soul without end because'ail of it would bave the same reading. We cannot go above the regulatory limnits because we would net receive permission fromn the regulatory agencies te go beyend that. Newc astle Lions News, (Continued from page 8) twenty-five year Firefighters Service Medal. Peter was among one hundred other firemen from across Ontario whoigathered at *Markharn Firefighters Hall te be honoured with long-service medals. The next Newcastle Lions Club meeting wiil be in the Lions Room at the Newcastle Cemmunity Hall on April 27. Dinner will be at 7:00 p.m. Mike Walters from Laidlaw will speak about "mining the dump". Guests are welceme, caîl Dave Adams 987-4832. The Community Liaison Group is new refining its work te see what those twe scenarios mean in ternis of the total arnount of volume that needs te be rernoved, what is involved in a number of container loads, the duration of the excavation and the costs thereof, as weli as any other problems associated with removal of alI of this material. We will have answers in the near future and will present those through this medium te you, our readers. We are also looking at the other questions, questions such as "Can the material be left where it is?", the answer is ne. "Can something-be done te make it stable?", the answer is possibly, but we are net sure because a project of that scale (28 acres) bas neyer been done before. Small scale projects yes, but none of the size of Port Granby. Therefore the favourite method seems Co be the excavation of the material and moving it eut witbout disrupting the community. We are leoking at this possibiity and feel confident that we will have answers for that by our deadline of April lst, 1994. The work is progressing well, we continue to meet every Tuesday night and you are invited te meet at the office on King Street in the Village of Newca stle. We invite you te 'corne te -any of our meetings, hear what is going, .raise.your concerns if you have any, or sunpîy just find eut what the preblems are that we are dealing witb. held in Ottawa.
