Orone Wéékly :Times, Wednesday, April 27,1l994 Y" Decisions ito make Mrs. Werry, Mrs. Bailey andi Mrs. Bilings have a few decisions ta make and they are only at the beginning of the array of luncheon dishes last Wednesday at the Orono United Church. The luncheon was sponsoreti the Orono Horticultural Society and as we hear it was more than seil-out. Everyone flocks ta where the good cooks have been. Moyoe~ by Helen MacDonald Tomorraw is my Grandma's' birthday. Born in 1901, Grantima has seen much in this near Century of her lifetime. She saw the invention of the automobile, but neyer awneti one. The airplane was also inventeti, only ta quickly be seen as commonplace as the moon walk changeti haw people saw the planet, saw the universe anti even saw aur place in the grand scheme. Family entertainment evalveti from conversation, games anti books ta radio programmes, movies houses anti television. The telephone, anti now computers, have altereti communication anti information systems s0 prafountily that few people bather ta write letters.. the kintis of wonderful, heartfelt letters of experience anti wisdom written by my grantimather. There have been significant ativancements in medicine anti science, nonemore monumental ta my Grantima than penicillin. Ho-wever, Grantima notes the other sitie of this coin: the science which has enhanceti human health anti living also inventeti the Bomb which ". .. impresses me not at ail!"I Womnen claimeti their ight ta vote anti their bialogical freedomn with the introduction of birth ('<ntrol. Men in factories anti ._nes unionizeti for better health anti safety protection. Grantima helti her first job at the age of twelve warking momîungs in a spinning mill anti attending sehool afternaons. She ieft school at age thirteen ta work full-time. Grantima's early work years led her ta jain England's Labour Party as she saw the warld she liveti in full of injustices. Recently, Grantima wrate: "I had few people ta talk ta about these things . .. your job depended on keeping your mouth shut". Not anly was Grantima an anomaly in her time as a young woman fighting the gooti fight against social injustice, but she fell in love with a co-worker recently returned from the war (the one ta end ail wars) who did not practice her family's religion. Young, balth families bitterly oppasedt t their 'courtship', and barely scraping a wage, they marrieti in a quiet ceremany at Grandad's place of warship. Only after receiving a gift of maney after their wedding dîd they buy a ,wetiding ring. The day after they married, they went back ta work. Ten months later, their flrst of seven chiltiren was born. While spending mast of thé next thirty years raising a family, Grandma continueti the work of her politics even standing for local council once. Today, stili sharp as ever, Grandma's letters are full of political anti social commentary. When Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister she neyer referred ta her as the Prime Minister. 1 knew who she was writing about when a sentence began with "That woman . . .", or containeti the phrase .. . weil, neyer mind, this is a family newspaper. My grantiparents celebrateti their 72nd Anniversary last week, anti tomorrow, Grantima is 93. This is what she wrote in her last piece of correspandence ta me. 1"1 wonder where we are al gaing. The young have a terrible job to righten things again. Greeti of money. Lost decency of living. Lack of religion..-. it worries me ... Our govemnment in Englanti is the mast expensive gavernment we have ever hati anti they have done the most harm. I just hope my grandchildren take more interest in what's going on around Anather wave of migrating birds It seems as birtis return fromn their winter quarters ta this part of the world in waves. At first it is the Homnet Larks, the Red Winged Blackbirds and of course the Robins. 0f more recent times, the last three ta four weeks, it has been the returni of water fowl as they raft along the lakefront waiting for open water ta return in their nesting areas. But most of the ducks have moved on northwarti. The Cranberry Marsh has but a few stragglers swimming about anti at' the mouth of the Rouge River no ducks are evitient with the exception of some Mallards. Bath Bill Bunting and I thought there would be a luli in birding for at least a week or two but I arn sure we did catch the ieatiing edge of another, wave in the migration. Ail was quiet for us on Sunday until we reached Thickson's Woods, a five or so acre bush, in south Whitby not far from the lakefront. ' Our mast outstanding find was a Fox Sparrow scratching around in the moist leaves. It is only the se cond sighting for both of us for this bird. Bath the White Throated Sparrow and the White Crowned Sparrow were most active travelling along the ground on their way ta the north. Another grounti feeder like the Fox Sparrow. Hermit Thrushes were in great numbers travelling their over-grounti route northerly. It was interesting that these birds were crossing the road at the same place andi that the same habitat was on bath sides of the roati. I hati seen these birds flying across the roati when Bill was paring the car andi they were stili flying across when we left an hour later. Another ground feeder andi one has ta wonder if there is some relationship in habitat in these three species of birds. There was also action in the trees with'the sighting of many Ruby and Yellow Crowneti Kinglets, one of the smallest of birds. The Yeilow Rumpeti Myrtie *..I nearly despair things have become so low I wonder how we can get things back ta more what they were withaut a real upheaval, but nat a war. I have lived ta see the resulis of a long marriage ail with familles doing ail they can . .. the world as it is tioes not heip parents . . .alyou can dois your best. I have had a hard life, but we had> lots of happiness amongst ail of the trials. 1 arn a lucky woman. I can stili care for myself. I have few aid age infirmities .. . and my husband andi I still love each other dearly.-" Happy Birthday Grandma, from one of your grandchiidren who has learneti much of life through your letters. Warbler were also singing and showing themselves in the tree tops. It is one of the earlier warblers ta retumn with the Pine Warbler also out at Thickson's Woods. We also sighteti a Yeilow- Beilieti Sapsucker along with the two popular woodpeckers andi Common Flicker. The big feature at Thickson Woods an Sunday was a Great lornet Owl standing guard over the young ini the nest high in the top of a White Pine. This nest has been untier considerable viewing aver the past weeks and on Sunday the fluffy white down of the young could be seen in the nest with the parent standing on guard beside the nest. It seems there is generally something new each week as the calendar turns to another day, another week and another month. Nature is in tune with the change of Urne. Reflexologist, Aromatheapst Fibre Facts --Part 1 It was in the late 1960's'that Dr. Dennis P.,Burkitt focused the attention of the world an the dietary habits of Africans. It was noted that bowel cancer was a rarityin Africa th is was due to the- high amaunts of dietary fibre consumeti. Thus we were informeti that by eating more indigestible, plant material we might enhance aur chance of preventing a hast of Idiseases. Some of which include colon cancer, diverticulosis and heart disease. What is Dietary Fibre? Put in practical terms, dietary fibres is the.part of the plant footis that man cannot digest. Dietary fibre is not founti in any animal foods. There are many kinds of this plant material and they can be groupeti into twa categories - soluble fibres and insoluable fibres. Soluble fibres include pectins andi gums and are founti in beans, rolleti oats and many fruits andi vegetabies. Insoluble fibres inclutie cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin which are found mainly in cereais andi grains. Bran for example, is rich in the insoluble fibres cellulose anti lignin. How Much Dietary Fibre Do We Need? This question is.not easily answereti though there is agreement that most need more tlian they currently get. In iight of this the best practice is ta increase dietary fibres from a variety of foods. Positive health resuits wil also appear when fat and sugars are reduceti from the diet.
