Waste Reduction Audit (Continued from page 1) School in the reduction of their waste and the lead they had taken in this process three years ago. As Ryan McCracken and Heather Houston can confirm through the use of the Audit sheet the Newcastle school bas reduced waste that bad required one pick- up a week to now one pick-up every twoweeks. Further more the cost of waste disposai at the school which in 1991 was $3002 has been reduced to $2300 in 1992 and furtber reduced to $1600 in 1993. The two students explain that the garbage is collected atthe school, sorted and weigbed and recorded on the chart. At this point the students decided on ways to reduce the waste. This is clone through composting, bagless lunches, recycling, using both sides of the paper, vermi-composting. 1The Audit chart was on display along with other interesting features of waste reduction plans ini the library room of the school where light reéfreshments, were served following the Environimental Launch. Again operated maple syrup event The Otonabce Region Conservation Authority operated the maple syrup operation at the 45 acre Hawthorne Sugar Bush south of Millbrook., The Authority taps somne 400 mapfle tres for the operation. The maple syrup event at the GanaraskaForest Centre was cancelled this year dlue to thc lack of funds. from Gord Milis MPP Durhzam East Last week, during Question Periocl at the Ontario Legislature, both Libpral Leader Lyn McLeod and Conservative Leader Mike Harris, macle much ado on three fronts, the deficit, jobsOntario and gun control in Ontario. Ms. McLeod focused on the so-called failure of jobsOntario. The fact is, that last week alone, jobsOntario local brokers ecated 35,707 jobs, and new jobs createcl by economic renewal projects (big deals) totalled 7,533. This years jobsOntario placements will save taxpayers $135 million in welfare costs, due to the fact that 45 per cent of those gaining jobs were former social assistance recipients. I f the creation of over 40,000 new jobs last week was considered to be a failure of the program by Ms. McLeod, I would like to know just what she would consider to be a success? Conservative Leader Mike Harris continued to focus on the deficit, and take advantage of the unfortunate murders that occurred in Ottawa and Toronto-, by proclaiming that only bis party bas an answer for the control of guns and ammunition in Ontario. Turning first to the deficit. While in government, the Provincial Conservatives had a deficit position for 15 years. Each year- of their last five years in goverfiment, the Conservatives ran up a deficit! Tbey are die last people who should be preaching deficit control to our govemmnent. We have faced the worst recession in the bistory of- Ontario, while in government. The Tories governed in good tines, and still managed to run up a cleficit. Last week, an agreement was reacbed between ail three parties, to bring the issue of gun control, ammunition and violence in general, before the Standing Committee of Justice, thereby removing any further political grandstanding on the matter. However, during theclebate on Thursday morning on two private members bis, to control the purchase and sale of ammunition, the Tories broke the agreement, and voted to send the private members bis to the Justice Committee.,Their actions mean that the committee will only be able to deal with the substance of the private member's bills as they relate to the control and purchase of ammunition. Ibis action is ail the more ludicrous wben the control of the sale of ammunition would appear to be a matter pertaining to criminal law which falîs into the juriscliction of the Federal Governmient. It would tberefor appear to me that any legisl ative action to furtber control -the sale of ammunition may have to be taken at the federal level. Grandstanding on this issue by Mike Harris and bis group is not the solution to this problem. We Lake the perception people have rcgarding the level of crime as a real problem. It is one that our government takes very seriously. AIl of us, as I said cluring tbe debate on Thursday morning, want to make our communities as safe as possible,- focussing on concrete changes that will have a real effect. There needs to be a comprehiensive, coordinated response to the issue of crime. Measures to combat crime require sufficient thought to ensure they are effective, rather than raving, including attacks on Metro Police Chair Susan Eng, by Conservative MPP Bob Runciman in the Legislature last Thursday morning added nothing to the effective solution the government is seeking to bring forward, with the.cooperation of all members of the Ontario Legislature. The Minister of Finance has announced the budget will be read on May 5th. l'in sure the good news wil bc macle into bad news by the opposition parties. There are no cuts for schools, hospitals or municipalities. No cuts to pe ople on social assistance. No clown loading problems like Ottawa Liberals. The deficit is down by 20 per cent andon track to go lower. No new taxes in 1994, and we have cut government spending by almost, $4-billion. We have a plan. Its working. And we are getting the job donc. Our goals remain the samie: Job creation, Maintaining services and controlling the deficit. On the job creation front our governiment is investing $3-billion in'new roads, water systems, subways and schools. This amount is TEN TIMES more than the Ottawa Liberal infrastructure plan. We have reached an agreement with OPSEU to create a new jointly-managed pension plan for OPSEU members. As equal partners in the new plan, the government and union will share responsibility for any new liabilities and will jointly decide how to use any gains generated by the plan. OPSEU has been seeking joint control over their member's pensions for over 20 years. We have caused that to Cedar Valley Resort SEASONAL TRAILER CAMPING $930-00 Attractive! As a result of this agreement, the government will achieve savings of approximately $392 million over 3 years. From this agreement, pensioners will flot lose any entitiements. Ail current pensioners wil remain in the non-OPSEU pension plan for which the government bas sole responsibility. Current members will NOT experience any reduction in their pension entitlements. Recently, I asked in my Queen's Park Report, for you to let me know how you, feel about the same sex issue. You have dlone that, and I appreciated hearing from you. I have only received one letter telling me to support the same sex legislation should it corne forward. 1 still believe the issue is one of Human Rights, and should bc treated as sucb. Looking back at the recent by-election in Victoria- Haliburton and the tactics employed by the Conservative Party there, it is obvious they intend to use the introduct ion of same-sex legislation as a political tool to gain some advantage. Their slogan and theme in Victoria-Haliburton was, "We sec jobs as the most important issue, flot same-sex legislation.' 0f course, our main focus as the government has been jobs, and I think our record shows just that. Same-sex legislation bas neyer been our government's main focus, it ce rtainly hasâ't ever been mine. If it had been our main focus, it begs the question, why wasn't it dealt with upon our election in 1990? >-Closing on a personalý note. I have taken quite a bit on, the chin, from various directions, the media, unkind letters, and personal slight, since my election in 1990. Most of it I considered unwarranted, and perhaps sour grapes from folks who couldn't bandle the fact the member was from the NDP. So, the Editorial that appeared in the Oshawa Times last Weclnesday, macle up for everything. Until next week - Candour is the brigbtest gem of criticism.
