The evening of musical devotion was sponsored by the OronolKirby Charge of the United Church. The programn of instrumental and vocal music along with audience hymn singing was followed by a gathering of fellowship and refreshments. Both groups were rnast appreciated and well received by the audience. Captain Harbin of the Letter to Whitehall from thie Duke of Wellton by way of Gord Mils, MPP Durhamn East People have over the ages it seerns, often have hati trouble with government. The Duke of Wellington wasn't any different. I have copieti a letter the Duke of Wellington wrote ta the British Foreign Office during the Napoleonic wars in Europe. I believe we can ail enjoy a laugh about it. As they say, nothing changes, and what goes around, cornes arounti. Gentlemen; Whilst rnarching ta Portugal ta a position which commands the approach ta Madrîi andi the French forces, rny officers have been diligently cornpiying with your requests which have been sent by H.M. ship from London ta Lisbon and then by dispatch rider ta aur heatiquarters. 1 We have enumerated aur saddles, bridles, tents and tent, poles, andi ah manner of sundry items for which His Majesty's Governrnent holds me accountable. I have dispatcheti reports on the character, wit and spleen of every officer. Each item andi every farthing' has been accounteti for, with twa regrettable exceptions for which I beg your indulgence. Unfortunately the sum of one shilling and ninepence remains unaccounted for in one infantry battalions petty cash anti there has been a hideaus confusion as to the number of jars of raspberry jarn issuedti t one cavalry regiment during a sandstorm iii western Spain. This reprehensive carelessness rnay be related to the pressure of circumstance since we are at war with France, a fact which rnay corne as a bit of a surprise ta you Gentlemen in Whitehall. This brings me ta rny present purpose, -which is ta request elucidation of my instructions from His Majestys Goverrnment, sa that 1 may better understand why I arn dragging an army over these barren plains. I construe that perforce it must be one of twa alternative duties, as given below. I shaîl pursue either one with the best of my abiîity but 1 cannot do bath: 1. To train an armny of uniforrned British clerks in Spain for the benefit of the accountant anti copy boys in London or perchance: 2. To see ta it that the forces of Napoleon are driven out of Spain. Your rnost obedient servant, W ellington Bowmanville Salvation Armny spoke briefly ta those present stating that the Salvation Armny dated back ta its beginning in 1865 and took on the name Salvation Arrny in 1875. i speaking of the band he said each unit does have its own band which has been tradition since their inception. Rev. Meryn Russeil chaired the events of the evening as well as giving a reading and leading in prayer.
