Orono W~ekly TImes~, W.dn.ud~y, M~y I I~ 1904 - Hooper's Jewelery at Home Show Hooper's Jewellery is alwa>'s a supporter of such events as the recent Home Show and will be seen again at the Orono Fair this fail. Danny Hooper explains some of the finer features of. the large ctocks on display to Melissa van den Heuvel of Newcastle. In speaking with mr. Hooper at the Home Show he said they are making some major changes at the store especiall>' in the display of the items of time pieces, jewellery and gifts. Bernie Martin a triple-treat at Orono Town Hall concert b>' Gregory Ward Bernie Martin is a warm and wonderful poet. In order to describe bow good, I sbould be better versed, reading more of it instead of renting so man>' movies. But 1 can tell you that Bernie beld fort>' or more people in bis gentle power for over an hour the Sunda>' before last at Orono Town Hall. That be made us laugb and wince. That he caused ail sorts of those murmurs of recognition - those littie involuntar>' sounds we make wben an artist tells it exactly like it is, tbe way we wisb we could have said it if ont>' we bad the talent and inspiration. Mosti>' Bernie read from a new-minted book of verse called Horses in Great Numbers and Qlh~IEQwnLa collection that proves be is as fine a poet as be is a playwrigbt, wbich is saying sometbing tbree montbs after bis compeling and barrowing FAliQn MUa 1 (watcb for repeat forruances soon), altbough that play' did comprise man>' breathtaking fligbts of poetry, at least one of wicb is captured in Hloe. Please don't expect me to quote actual lines to try and evoke the magic of this stim collection, or especially of Bernie's performance of it that Sunda>' evening; to do so would bc about1 as effective as reciting a menu to describe the experience of a delicious meal. But listen... it was, and is, about living in the moment, about loss and regret, about human frailt>' and cruelt>' and stupidit>' and our boundless capacit>' for love. It's about living and d>ing and dancing the polka. So if youre interested, cati Ro>' here at The Times or corne b>' and pick up a cop>', six bucks. Then find a quiet corner in >'our bouse - or your heart - and read. Believe me, the pleasure w ill last much longer than a movie! Bernie also read a few things b>' other poets: the fecund South American, Pablo Neruda, the Sufi m>stic, Rumi; he read us haiku of exquisite simplicit>' from the great master of that form, Matsuo Basho. Exotica? Far from it; Bernie's past work, the one-man plays and recitai.s that have made bim something of a local hero, prove that this man is oni>' interested in the simplest, Most transparent truths. It would upset him terribi>' if an>' of bis audience came unstuck because he was being obscure. In fact be is not above repeating whole poems to get the message across, or making s>'mpathetic announcements, as be did on Sunda>', to let us know that 1w knows poetry readings can cause overload, like museum fatigue except your, bum aches instead of >'our feet. 0f course, we mustn't forget that Bernie Martin is also a fine actor, that tbe guy knows how to work a roorn. Wben he began that Sunda>' evening, the sunset was slanting througb the old ball's south windows, dust motes swimming in warm amber, soon fading, so that the visual focus narrowed, unnoticeabi>' but suret>', on Bernie spotlit at bis tectern. Churcby, spiritual, definitely good theater. Not that be needed tbe effect - the power of his performance would have gathered and beld us just as suret>' had the room been fluorescent -lit witb the Ctarington Concert Band rebearsing in the basement. But be made us glad of bis triple talent, that be is an exception to the rule that actors seldom-write their own material, whetber because the demands of a serious actor's craft preclude time and energy for writing, or because actors fish in shallower waters, a littie above tbe murky depths where poets and playwrigbts dredge their souls. But this actor writes deep, and this poet acts witb seamless ease, so that we neyer notice the little marvels of movement and timing that Bernie can effect with a pair of haîf-moon spectacles, a handkerchief, a glass of water. I did say triple talent, because our Bernie, bless bim, is also a musician. You could hear music in the verse on Sunda>', even if Bernie had neyer touched bis fiddle or his accordion. It's there in the lyrical repetition tbat pervades bis poems, in the lilting, vulgar bumor to bé expected of a man who adores the jig and reel and shanty; it's there, embedded in a poem like Lazarus that is itself almost a little blues. And you know be's a musician when you realize that however well bis poems read on paper, the>' make even better listening. Naturally though, Bernie did play' the violin on Sunda>', teasingly, to build suspense and a sense of dislocation and absurdity in a poem about doing the polka and nothing else. And of course he played bis button accordion wbich could neyer be a prop because it is, 1 suspect, one of bis soul-mates. Oh he played it sweet and yearning that night, as be sang a love song that isn't in bis book, whose words I forget, altbougb I will neyer forget tbe way be sang, the tone of voice that w as a perfect expression of a new persona, together with the stigbtly tired linen suit that replaced bis fanilliar folksy look, the cerebral baîf-glasses, the tousled bair and lopsided accent. Mais oui, meet Bernard Martin, to rhyme witb can-can... debonair, bobemian, cosmopolitan. Yes, Bernie completely reinvented himself for us, in a bilarious and remarkable way, the more SO because the transformation was in part, or even wbolly, necessitated by recent throat surger>'. All of it - Bernie's book, bis acting, bis p laying - shows us that he bas not merel>' risen to the challenge of a bard time bealthwise, but that be is able to soar out of the experience, to circle it, to dive upon it and snatch what he needs Kenlmdal Hall News b>' Phyllis Lowery On Monda>', May' 2nd, the men of Kendal L.O.L. 405 took part ini a Service for the late Bro. Ross McRoberts of Tyrone Men's Lodge. A combined Service of tbe Orange and Black Lodges was performed. Ross was well known to this communit>' and will be, missed. The sympathy of aIl the Orange families goes out to the McRoberts famil>'. Sorry to report that on Saturda>', Ma>' 7tb another memnber of the Orange Lodge of Kendat passed away, Lloyd Webb. An Orange Service will take place on Monda>' evening. Lloy'd was formerl>' a member of Pont>'pool Lodge and transferred to Kendal Lodge. Until last summer, Lloy'd was a faitbful member of the Kendal Band where he pla>'ed the fife. The sympathy of the Orange familles goes out to the members of the Webb famil>'. On Frida>',Ma>' 6tb, the last card part>' of the season was beld at the hall, with 13 tables in pla>'. Once again the ladies took ail the honours. Higb score Marie Couroux witb 79 and M>rtle Gibson 79-, 2nd high lune Wilson witb 78; 3rd bigh Bernice Soper to feed fledgling ideas, and laugb all the way to the aerie. But corne to think of it, Bernie would probably hate sucb a metaphor. For, hlm, possession of a great spirit is the simple and natural result of man>' >ears of care and feeding, of the true artist's struggte witb, and commitment to, the realm of the beart. So forget eagle. Go witb chameleon. Or actor. Or artist. Sorr>' Bemie ... artiste. Bravo mon brave! with 77. The draw was won b>' Marie Couroux and free admission to the first card part>' in the fait was won b>' Bernice Milligan. Diane Polley and Theresa Langstaff won the trophies for the 1993-94 season witb a score of 95. Sce you al i the fail.
